Have been looking for Ym 3110D 36 HP (Gray Market Re-built). Want to add a backhoe (7 1/2' size). Can I run a hoe with a smaller HP tractor, say 25HP. Someone said it's not the HP that matters but the pump size. There are many more 25 to 30 hp Yanmars available than the bigger 3110-36HP. I don't want to buy a tractor that will not operate the hoe properly.

The problem isn't the pump or the HP. It's the chassis. Backhoes are brutal on tractors. More than one has been broken in half. If you do put a loader on, it'll need to be a full subframe model. The problem is that nobody makes a subframe backhoe for a foreign Yanmar. Frankly, that's proably true for any grey market tractor. That said, if you are handy, you could buy a backhoe and build the subframe to fit the tractor. I did it for my loader, and came to realize just how big the project really was. The bottom line is that you might just be better off with a tractor that is purpose built for a loader, or an American model where one could be mounted. Both of these options will certainly cost more than a good Yanmar, but will be cheaper than trying to find somebody who can weld a iron transmission housing.
