Hi all. New member here. I am purchasing a sub compact and have narrowed it down to a Yanmar 221 or Kubota 1870 with FEL. Both have dealers near by. There is also a Mahindra dealer nearly as close. I have 23 acres, mostly wooded and not accessible by tractor. There are approximately 2.5 acres that are open. I am having a new home built on the site. Primary use for the tractor will be re-grading the gravel driveway (It has been torn up pretty good by construction equipment), repairing the lawn (again, torn up by construction equipment) and light landscaping. After the construction project, it will be used primarily for snow removal, hauling firewood and ongoing landscaping and possibly tilling. It won't be used much, if at all for mowing. I've got quotes for both, with the Yanmar coming in about $700 higher. For that price, I gain a couple of horsepower and engine displacement. Suggestions? Any others I should be considering in the same price range? There is a Deere dealer in the area, but pricing is significantly higher. Thanks!

I really like the looks of the new little yanmars. Unfortunately they have poor dealer representation in my area. I'm also pro kubota since I own one and have a great dealer. The bx kubotas have a great track record but the 1870 is a little small compared to the yanmar and mahindra you're looking at. I think any of the three would make a very good tractor! If you like the mahindra and have a good dealer go for it!

Would suggest you look at the Kubota B series, not the BX models like the 1870. The BX line is an "estate tractor" model with less ground clearance and smaller size, optimized for mowing and grounds care; the B models are a bit bigger and have more clearance, would probably be a better choice for the work you describe. Having said that, should note my 9 year old BX has done its share of heavy work without problems and continues to amaze with its ability. Moving up to a B platform would probably shift the price point a little.
Thanks for the feedback. The Mahindra definitely seemed a little beefier than the BX series Kubota at a similar price point. I looked at the B series, but the prices went up in a hurry. I've always been a Kubota fan, but was impressed with the Mahindra tractors. The only thing I didn't care for was the "price up" to get the 0% financing, but it looks like everyone does that to some degree.

Don't make the mistake that many, many people make - i.e., buying a tractor that is too small. The best advice is to buy one size larger than what you think you need.
For working in the woods and hauling firewood, tilling, etc., I'd suggest looking at the next steps up in the Mahindra - specifically the Max25 and Max 28. The 28 is a larger frame size and seems quite a bit beefier from my limited seat time on one (just "test sitting" it, not working it).

Thanks Pappy. That is my concern with the 1870. I'll have to give it serious consideration over the next couple of days. There are some great deals on the Kioti CK2510 right now and it offers a little more HP and a beefier frame. I don't have much experience with Kioti, but may try to look at them over the weekend. The downside is an hour trip to the dealership.

Check with the locals about the dealers. A good dealer is better than brand information. Also, what parts do they stock is important, particularly from overseas brands that don't have a US factory or distribution system. I am a Kubota fan, they are lightweight, but great quality. I have had 2 over the last 20 years and no problems other than self inflicted ones during that time with hard use.
