I know this topic is an old one but when everybody was talking about it I didn't have the problem. I bought one of the first XUV's in March of this year. I didn't have a problem with it until early fall when I started getting "that noise" under the front differential that many were talking about. I had about 60 hours on it before it started making the thumping sound.

I took it to the dealer and he looked up the serial number which took him to a service bulletin that mentioned the backlash adjustment on the front drive shaft. They pulled it apart and all the proper washers were in there, the adjustments were made and it was reassembled.

The noise stopped, for about an hour. I took it back and he readjusted some fitting with a hex head. He said he had to push in the shaft then back it out some so it wouldn't lock up. It was quiet again, for about an hour. It is still making the noise but not as bad.

I went back yesterday just to speak with him and he said the adjustment may need a little fine tuning and that I could try it myself or take it back to him. He did suggest that a JD factory rep would be at the dealership in 2 weeks, I could bring it in then and have him look at it.

I know there was some concern on the first production models. The questions I have is (1) if anyone has had to get this fixed and found a permanent solution to the problem, and (2) does anyone have a later model XUV that has the same problem. I would think they would have the kinks worked out by now. The reason I ask is that I am considering trading for the diesel. I have the 620i which I really like (except for the noise) but I would think the diesel might be a little better. The trade difference is $2000 which is steep for trading in a new Gator for a new Gator although the diesel is a $1100 option right off the top. Please let me know if anyone has the permanent fix for the noise (other than a trade).

But he bought his back in March. I think it is fixed on the new ones. I have not had any noise on mine which was delivered in Oct.

I am glad to hear the later models seem to be alright. I sure wouldn't let the noise stop me from buying a XUV. I think it is still the best all around machine out there (unless you want to go 50 mph). I am confident the noise problem will be taken care of. The dealer seems genuinely concerned and said the problem will be fixed. The JD rep is the next step. Maybe they will trade me out for a new one?

I had the front end noise problem, but mine was fixed by the adjustment outlined in the service bulletin.

The bulletin says to make an adjustment, drive it to see if the noise goes away, if not adjust again, etc.

My noise was adjusted out and has not returned.

Hey Kahuna,

I've got a 2006 Diesel HPX with "that noise." Just started a few weeks ago and it's got around 60 hours on it. Thanks for your post; now I know there's a bulletin out on it and I'm not the only one with that problem. I guess next step is to the dealership :( It's a great machine, but I hate that noise.

I think it's exclusive to the XUVs... Never heard of it on the HPX.

oh wait he got an 06 you ain't got the noise .get out of here lol ..just joking . you could maybe the hanger bearing under the center console is going out . i need to check mine. if that goes out it will let the shaft move and will create noise too.you might wanna check it out.

well the diferentials are probably the same on all the models xuv and hpx "i'm guessing" so you could probably get the noise on a new hpx.
Come to think of it I think skip said the XUV has the same LSD front diff as an '06 HPX.

you iether got a locker or a slipper but i don't think you can have both. the diferentails or diferent from the limited slip diferential as for as i know i looked them up on the parts list and they don't even look the same.i would have swapped out mine for a newer one already .not for the 4x4 but for the way the shaft seals upcoming out of the diferential. i don't think the 06 had aL.S.D front i think they locked the fronts with the 06's on up.

Maybe I'm using the term LSD wrong here. I thought an LSD is where when the front diff sensed some slipping it would lock up? That's the way it is on cars I know when they talk about LSDs.

But yes your right about the '06s being locked up in the front.

The front diff on an XUV is similar to reverse limited slip.
For ex.. an RTV when the front is locked and it gets in a bind one wheel disengages.
(they have a diff similar to the ones found on most 4 wheel drive trucks/cars) LSD

With an XUV when the front is locked and one wheel spins the other will lock.
John Deere calls this auto-locking.. I like reverse LSD myself...

OEM-supplier only I'm sure. That's the "True 4wd" diff from the HPX/XUV in the photo.

from the above link, "Applications for all-terrain and light utility vehicles", maybe that's why the RTV doesn't use them?

Your point is??

I know the RTV is heavy but I don't believe that's why it is only 3 wheel drive..
