I said free was preffered, but was willing to spend a few bucks. The pictures of my daughter are irreplaceable.

I burn photos to two DVD's and keep a copy on a spare hard drive. One DVD stays at home and one DVD gets stored in my desk at work. Same for important electronic documents, except the spare DVD gets stored in the safety deposit box at the credit union.

As for Norton Ghost... we use it often at work. We unplug the CD drive and stick a hard drive in its place. We then ghost the main hard drive to an image file on the second hard drive. We never ghost disk to disk, always disk to image file. That way, we can never accidentally restore the wrong disk over another disk, because Norton will not allow you to restore a disk from an image file that the image file lives on.

backup is running now on my desktop as I type on my laptop. I chose the backup option vs. the whole disk image.

Time remaining for 16GB is 3 hours. I think the USB is what is limiting the speed. Is there anyway for me to upgrade the USB from 1.0 to 2.0? Is it a software/driver thing or hardware?

You can buy a USB 2 add on card. You might as well look for one with a firewire port, too.

We do print out the pix via shutterfly - I suppose they are backed up there (so long as they stay in business).

Thanks again to everybody for their help - this is what makes tbn so great - tractor help, fencing help, computer help
