I had asked the dealer and they said they weren't sure yet what had caused it. I suspect the differential lock based on how sloppy the linkage was.

The dealer dropped my tractor back off Wednesday afternoon. They had to replace the left axle on it. They did not have any conclusive answer as to what caused the axle to break. He did tell me that the axle shaft was twisted at the break.

Going forward, I guess I will keep a closer eye on the differential pedal to make sure it isn't hit accidentally or stuck in the down position.

Glad you got your tractor back. Based on the twist in the axle at the break, That usually means both axles were locked together but were trying to turn at different speeds. Keep an eye on the diff lock and keep all its linkages and moving parts lubed. Same thing happened on my Mahindra 2615 but I caught it before anything broke.

We can really only speculate about the cause of the binding, but to me, the diff lock seems like the most likely culprit.

Since you've put 100 hours on this machine without needing it anyways, perhaps a diff lock safely could be devised. I'm thinking a little block under the pedal, or a hook that holds it up. Something simple that would ensure that it's not unintentionally engaged, but would be simple to remove should you need that feature.

That's not a bad idea, I'll look at it and see what I can come up with.

Thanks
Jim

I machined a stop for the differential lock pedal this morning and installed it. I'm just going to keep a 9/16" wrench in the tool box in the event I ever need to remove it and use the differential.

Thank's Motown for the great idea.

Looking good! Glad I could help. If you don't use it anyway, making sure it doesn't accidentally get used seems like a good idea.

Now, hopefully this doesn't happen, but... If the axle ever breaks again, and they don't want to warranty it, maybe they'll say "the diff lock must have gotten stuck on, which is operator error". Then you show them these pretty pictures. :)

I think my axle is broke again. I was pushing out some small saplings (1"-2" dia) this morning, going pretty slow about 1/3 speed in low. When I went to push the third one out the tractor stopped dead.

I had to put it in four wheel drive to get it back to the shed. Same symptoms as before, I am currently at 226 hours. The differential stop that I had made the last time this happened was in place, so I know the differential lock was not accidentally engaged.

Needless to say, but I'm not a happy camper this afternoon, going to call the dealer Monday, so they can pick it up.

Has anyone else had this happen on thier XJ2025H?

That is odd. Try and get a pic of the axle from them if that's the case. Our tractor is pretty much always in 4WD. Unless I'd hit the road with it, our terrain is more suited for 4WD. Do you think that it would have taken some stress off the rear drive in 4WD? I just changed tire pressures and lowered the rears to 22 from the 31 in the book. Maybe a lesser pressure could absorb some stresses.

I have a M6800 Kubota 2 wheel drive and a JD 5525 with four wheel drive. I have had to stop both when have used differential lock for it to release and think you may find some manuals will tell you "may" have to back up to release the pressure for it to release. On my Kubota you can not turn it sharp at all with the differential lock and not it is a 2 wheel drive and the front wheels will just slide.

Sorry for your problem.
