X500 pricing and reliable

Have been happy with x500 after about 1.5 seasons maybe 40 hours. Biggest advantage over x300 it replaced, is a servicable x72 transmission. I mow about 2 .5 acres of hilly land with 10% grade front to back, and will replace the trans fluid sooner than recommended. The x300 slowed down over time as reported here and elsewhere the lower model unservicable tranny on that one did not tolerate the hills well.

I think your looking at the right mower for what your descrbing your land as. My BIL has one with a loader and he really likes it. It is a GT on steroids. You may never have to buy another. Box store mowers are only for the guys with very smooth and sub 1 acres lots. Anything more than 2 acres and rough ground will eat them alive.

Cub had lots of power, The deck was useless. Didn't cut even, belt constantly falling off. spindles every year. Previously to that we had a Craftsman. 8 years running that. The Craftsman before that lasted for 20yrs, older then I am. Metal hood. gear transmission. wish those would come back in style... Probably still worth fixing!

Oh yeh, The Craftsman from 20+ years ago are not your Craftsmans of today.. for that matter most things are not. I have seen neighbor after neighbor where I used to live all buying the sub $2,000 mower to take care of 5 acre tracts of land. You just can't do it without constant breakdowns. I would see them plowing through deep grass on their MTDs and would say well that thing will be sitting burned up soon.. and sure enough within a couple of weeks it would be sitting where they left in the yard, half mowed yard.

I bought my X530 in June 2012 for 5,820 + tax. Not sure how today's pricing is in relation to then, as I haven't been to the dealer but once since purchasing. I just order all my maintenance items. I have 250+ trouble free hours on mine.

I mow some very steep ground and it holds traction great. I have the HDAP tires and also highly recommend them.

If you decide on the HDAP tires, and they won't throw them in, you may want to price the x530 as it comes standard with the HDAP's. At least they did in 2012. Upgrade cost may not be much different than buying the tires extra and you would get the power steering and power deck lift as a bonus. The power steering is probably my favorite option.

I have a X-540 with about 320 hours I'd like to sell if anyone's interested. It's in great shape I just don't use it anymore.I bought a ZT. If anyone's interested send me a PM, If I knew how to post I'd put it in there so hope this is ok. I'd like to get $4200 for it, it feels like a fair price based on what others are selling for. I think I gave $7400 new.

Thanks,
Matt

I just left the local dealer, paid $5432.20 for a 2015 left over X500, 48" deck. Delivery some time this week.
I did contemplate waiting for a 2016, probably $800 more out the door. Only real difference would be the improved deck and X570 tag on the hood.
