John Deere x500
Hey all,

I have a 2015 John Deere x500. Went to change the oil today and noticed something very strange. The salesmen looked up my tractor via his computer and my product ID number. He provided me the oil filter according to that information. It is the same oil filter that the owner's manual requires. Now the actual oil filter on the tractor is a different one. It's longer and skinnier. The salesman could not figure it out.

Any ideas?

No idea, but welcome to TBN.

Welcome! I suppose that it is possible that you have the skinnier filter. That is about the time of the change. The OEM Kawasaki for that is 49065-7010. If yours is the smaller , use this number or the Deere AM107423 The larger filter is 49065-7007 is essentially the same as the common Briggs and Kohler filters. AM125424 is the Deere number for the larger.

Thanks for the reply. Is it possible to have installed (at one point in time) the wrong filter?? I know the shorter and fatter filter does not have the same base, however is it still possible? Allow me to post a picture of the filter on the machine. I think it fits perfectly.

I am not sure how to upload an image. I apologize.

Another difference is the air filter. The narrow oil filter engine had the flat panel air filter. When I look in the aftermarket book, they show very little difference at the base and the mounting thread is 3/4 16 on both. A quick look at the JD maintenance kits show the ones with the wide oil filter and snorkel air cleaner above serial 180,001 .

BTW on the top of the reply box ,the icon which is the 3rd from the right will allow you to search for an image on your computer and insert it. Once you select the image, click on up load files. It is kind of strange as the upload files isn't a normal radio button.

I think I figured it out. While finally changing the oil, I went to get my oil pan and found an old filter. It was the fat one like the salesman said would be correct. At one point in time I must have accidentally put on the wrong oil filter. YIKES!!! Now I haven't noticed anything wrong with the mower, could I have possibly damaged the engine? I change the oil very frequently.

If you're not leaking oil anywhere you are probably fine.
