Hi all, I am trying to fix this mower for a friend that just got it "as is" with his new house. I am a car mechanic so figured I could help him out but no luck.

I have already changed out the fuel filter, put in new spark plugs (tested and they work) and added a gallon of gas. I took apart the air filter housing and was able to spray some "easy start" spray into the intake and it would run for a split second.

From what I am reading and found out this mower's fuel pump is in the gas tank. Any ideas on what might be wrong? Is there a service manual out there that tells how to replace the fuel pump? I jacked up the mower to poke around underneath but didn't notice anything simple.

Thanks for the help!

I do not have any experiance with that particular machine but with most John Deere mowers in that catagory you can easily unbolt the rear fender deck to access the top of the fuel tank and I am sure that is where you will find the pump. I hope this helps.

Silly question but there are safety switches on these machines to prevent starting, I assume you checked those? Tranny in neutral, pto off, butt sensor in seat.

Maybe need to bleed the fuel injection (screw to open), as it may have been run empty of gas. As well, need to loosen that screw when changing the fuel filter.
Do you have the manual for the X485? Here is an online manual, and on the left side (col) will see the X485 "Replacing Fuel Filter" procedure listed.

There is a service manual on CD available, that is very detailed.

Let us know a bit more about what you've already checked out and know is "done". ;)

You have to look in the manual I can't remember were it is but there is a fuel pump fuse we had an x485 and we had to replace that fuse a couple of times over about 6 years

Probably shouldn't ask so if there is fuel in the tank, the pump should feed the system. No bleeding needed. These tractors have been know to crack the short fuel line between the pump(in tank) and the nipple on the fuel pump unit. pressure may be lost there. You'll need to pull the rear fenders off to work on it. I would try to check for fuel pressure before digging in.
