Does anybody know if the number next to the wire color on the wiring diagram in the WSM is the wire size? If it is, what is the correct way to interpret it? Attached is an example from the B3200 WSM for the ignition switch.

The two wires with 2 next to the color are 0.101 inch diameter and the two wires with 3 next to the color are 0.149 inch diameter. That is diameter of insulation, not actual conductors.

Thanks,

Strange, my BX WSM, has the actual wire gauge next to the wire color. Maybe it is in MM. What do you find imprinted on the wire itself? Might give you a clue. There may be a chart somewhere on the NET. Google, wire gauge to MM or reverse equation.

You can't really go by the outer diameter of the insulation because there are so many different types. Different types of insulation require different thickness of insulation for a given use. Teflon insulation can be much thinner than PVC for the same insulation value. You really need the conductor diameter for a true wire size. Most of your wiring will probably be either fourteen gauge or sixteen gauge. Some may be heavier but none is likely to be much lighter other than instruments perhaps.

There may be a key at the beginning of the electrical section or before the first diagram or after the last.

My manual does not give a code or any other explanation of the wire number, but I do believe it is the metric size of the wire in cross sectional area in mm. Do not expect this to match AWG wire sizes as they are different. Automotive uses metric wire and typically the wire size is smaller than what guidelines or online calculators yield based on load and total wire length. It may not be easy to find metric wire locally, but what is commonly available to OEMs worldwide.

Here is one chart to help match up the metric sizing with AWG.

Agree with RickB, somewhere in the docs there will be a key that gives the wire size and color codes.

Japanese will not convert their wire gauge numbers for you.
The printed number in the wiring diagram is the wire cross section in square millimeters.
Lots of "on-"line conversions to imperial sizes as moship provided

Manual will described the color letters.

Thanks for the replies. I did figure out that it is cross section area in mm over at orange tractor talk. Web is certainly full of charts to convert. The WSM has absolutely nothing pertaining to these wire size numbers. It does have the color codes, but never anything about what these wire size numbers are. I wouldn’t expect the metric to awg conversion in the manual, but it should explain what the numbers represent.

Thanks again,
