OK, OK I'll admit I've used a screwdriver as a quickie oil filter wrench :) .

I have had to that a ton because I don't own a filter wrench. I really ought to get one though to avoid the mess....

How 'bout using a fingernail clipper for wire cutter & stripper, then soldering the splice using cigarette lighter for heat.

/ wrong tool used / fess up #26
then soldering the splice using cigarette lighter for heat ....there ya go -- using the wrong tool .... the lighter is for the heat shrink after splicing...;) ... and a pie tin is used for sheilding the greasy area behind the flame....

Every since John and Lorena Bobbit made the front page, I've been a little more carefull about anything that involves the possibility of upsetting my wife. That and the "burning bed" thing got my complete and undivided attention. ;)

However, before Lorena decided to Bobb-it, I used to use the wifes kitchen like my shop.

Back then, I was like every young man. I had a fascination with high performance cars. I had a new 1968 SS Camaro. Rally Sport trim package, 396, 4 speed, Hugger Orange with white stripes, Cragers all around, Lakewood traction bars, 4:33 gear, headers, glass packs, and a stack of speeding tickets. It was my baby!

One day I decided that it was time for a new set of valve covers. I went to the local speed shop. They were out of M/T valve covers. (Mickey Thompson) The counter guy had a set of USED ones he wanted to sell. They were "mill finish aluminum", but were stained and discolored. They were also available with a black "crinkle paint" finish. I decided to buy the used ones, then paint them myself. I bought a can of the crinkle paint too. After I got home, I read the instructions on the paint can. It said to allow the paint to tack up, then "heat treat" them in an oven. Simple enough.....

We had just bought our first home. My wife was so proud of her house, ESPECIALLY the kitchen. She was still at work when I painted the valve covers. So, I took them inside and fired up the oven. After it got good and hot, in went the valve covers. After a few minutes, I started smelling hot paint. Within 15 minutes, the entire house smelled like burnt paint. I yanked the valve covers out of the oven and returned to the garage. When Leigh made it home, she went balistic. In the dead of winter, temps near zero, we spent the night with all the windows in the house standing wide open. I spent the next day shopping for a new oven.

I may not be the brightest crayon in the box, but I NEVER used anything from her kitchen again.

I can relate.

My wafe has come home and found the front grill of a tractor in the dish washer, and a pot ont he stove boiling some water with some leather and hard rubber gaskets in it ( to rebuild the hyds in my 52 8n that was torn apart in the garage ).

The pot of parts was bad enough.. ( pot is now a shop tool... ).. However I thought she was gonna have a cow when the dishwasher opened...

Seemed like a good idea at the time.. and actually.. the grill came very clean!

I have to admit loosing my temper and using the screwdriver/hammer to take off a stubborn oil filter...that was a messy job. I have pounded nurmous things with a 3/8 inch driver, and have used a pair of vicegrips like they were a complete socket set.

Hey, I almost forgot! The best way I know of to clean up really dirty old cast iron parts is to put them in a SELF CLEANING oven for a while? Should my wife ever ask you about that, you didn't get that info from me.......

I have found that the dishwasher is the best tool for cleaning automatic transmission parts - I can get away with it as long as I run two empty flushing loads afterward. We just replaced our current dishwasher and the old one goes out in the shop as a parts washer. It runs OK but the racks are beginning to rust apart.

I am having problems with the new dishwasher - it is smarter than I am.

I have that problem too.......But that's part of the reason I married her.

(Again, should my wife inquire about my comments, you've never heard from me)

Allright Chris,
Once upon a time I had a 1969 Camaro SS. I was into go fast back then, and I decided to remove the stock fuel pump and install a electric pump. Well, instead of using a tubing cutter I tried using a hacksaw. All was going along well until gas started coming out of the partially severed gas line, but the best part was when I accidentally started to hacksaw through the BATTERY CABLE at the same time gas was spewing from the fuel line

OK, so Im not a race car mechanic ;) :) I still remember the scene vividly :) heck thats only 37 years ago :)
