I have an 06 Chevy 6.0. Good truck but the towing rating of 10k is for flat ground not mountains. Was really happy with truck when I first got it but as my towing has increased the only time I am happy to be driving a gasser is when I pull up to the pump. Wish I had bought a diesel. Same truck with a dmax is a 15k truck. Nice jump in towing capacities there. But when I bought it I couldn't see the $7-8k premium for the diesel but now I wish I had bit the bullet and bought one. I agree with the OP that he will be happier with the diesel IMO.

Points I agree with 100%. I even asked a fellow Tundra owner who towed with his before I bought mine. He swore it was great, as he was pulling a 25ft BP travel trailer. Of course a few months after I got my truck, he sold his and bought a motorhome. Hmmmmmmmm

I've owned my 2003 Ford F250, 7.3 Powerstroke, since new. It is a Lariet, crew cab, and has the FX4 towing package. It literally is the best truck I have ever owned, and is still like new condition. It just turned 100K miles. I really take care of my truck with regular maintenance, like oil changes every 5K miles with Rotella, fuel filter every 15K miles, and transmission flush every 30K miles. I think the only issue I've had is a bad ICP sensor and batteries every 4-5 years. I owned a GMC 3/4 ton truck before this one, and I really didn't like the GMC, especially the interior.

I tow a gooseneck trailer hauling my JD tractor to my hunting property and my F250 performs flawlessly. I would say the only complaint I have might be the fuel mileage. I get 14-15 mpg, doesn't matter whether driving in the city or on the highway. Pulling a trailer it will dip to 11 mpg.

I've thought several times that I might go buy a new Ford F250, and then I ask myself..........why? Sure the new truck will smell new and have a warranty. It might have a few more bells and whistles as well, but I would also have to spend an additional $40K if I sold or traded my truck. It's just not worth it to me.

So I'm keeping my truck because I love it. If you can find a truck like mine with the 7.3 engine and well cared for, do yourself a favor and buy it.

Whatever issues Ford might have, they are the best on the road.Yes there have been some issues with the diesel engine in the past. Its funny because Ford owns Cummins .A dual wheel truck would prove more stable with the trailer but a 350 Ford single wheels will do the job with a reasonable driver.Ford trucks are the top selling vehicle in the world. All these people
must know something.

I'm running a 2006 3/4 T LBZ with about 280k on the clock pulling a 10.3k fifth wheel. This rig has been all over the country without so much as a single issue. Stay away from the Ford 6.0 and if you go with a later model in any brand just realize that only time on the clock proves reliability. Fords new offering seems to be doing well but IMO it isn't fully proven just yet. I've owned both GM and Ford products in the past and in 06 I opted for the GMC simply because of body style. The Ford just seemed to square looking to me. Also the Allison holds the power band sweet spot better than all competitors resulting in better power utilization and mileage.

FORD DOES NOT OWN CUMMINS! In the past Ford owned part of Cummins, but not anymore. Diesel Power Mag just did a story in the last few months and it was titled Top Ten Rumours That Aren't True and this one was on the list.

IMG_1059.jpg I have a 1999 F350 SRW crew cab, 4X4 with the 7.3 diesel and 6 speed manual trans. and just turned a whopping 36,000 miles (yes, thirty six thousand one owner miles) that is stored in a heated garage every winter. The ride is excellent, even better than some 1/2 ton trucks I've ridden in. It pulls 22,000# easily, you can even set the cruise when in 5th gear which is direct drive, not over-drive. As far as fuel mileage, I commonly get 19-20 mpg empty driving 55 mph. When loaded with a gooseneck trailer and two 7,500# tractors, I get 11.2 mpg if I drive 55-56 mph in 6th gear, or 9.5 when I start pushing it to 65 mph in 6th gear. I change oil every 3,000 miles which is a bit expensive since the engine takes 15 quarts of oil plus a $12 filter so a person has to assume the extra fuel enconomy of the diesel exceeds the extra cost of oil changes. I have a health issue which is affecting my left leg (clutch leg) so have been thinking of looking for an automatic with a diesel engine. Your 5,200# fifth wheel would be a cake walk for a 3/4 ton or 1 ton truck with a diesel engine. After you talk to many people who tow things with their trucks, I often hear a common thread...you can't buy enough pickup truck. Seems sooner or later a person tends to graduate to larger and larger things to tow/haul. I can't tell any difference in ride quality between a 3/4 ton and 1 ton SRW crew cab truck so I would tend to be looking for a 1 ton truck.

go with a ford I have a f350 7.3 diesel the good one with 75000 miles on it and towed [my first time towing a 365 prowler with 4 slides. I towed from Vegas to alaska and back home to maine it is rated for 12,500 towing and it was simple and comfortable. If you have an interest pauleirman@yahoo.com I do not have a need for it any more.

Did you say you have a 30' 5th wheel RV trailer that has a dry weight of 5,200. lbs.? Have you weighed your trailer? Manufacturer's weights are usually way under the actual weight and do not include any options. I would suspect that it's closer to 7.200 dry, and 8,500 - 9,500 loaded. That's clearly out of 1/2 ton territory.

Ever look at the Ford ecoboost? we tow a 6000 lb travel trailer and load the truck with motorcycles( 800 lbs) and it doesn't feel much different that when empty!! As a professional Heavy DUty Diesel Mechanic, I have no use for a Deisel pick-up AT HOME. If you plan to Haul ,and tow heavy loads 80% of the time , then get a diesel, otherwise your wasting you money. just my 2 cents
