I don't think so. I think that area is the smoke box. Fire at the back gets sucked through the boiler and into the smokebox. Steam is injected into the smoke box to increase the draw.
Seems the heat efficiency would fall to very low levels with that uncovered.

I just re-read a bunch of steam heating classes I had to take years ago. It's impressive stuff. My employer has several buildings with steam heat exchangers that make hot water for building heat and domestic hot water. No live steam in the buildings except for that. We aren't allowed to touch it, just monitor the temps and pressures and report any deviations or leaks. One of their buildings has the boiler(s) in it and that feeds the others. We used to have to blow down those boilers twice a week to remove contaminates. They replaced them a few years ago and that's all automated now.

Anyhow, it's interesting and useful, but must be respected. ;)

For the guys who know steam better than I. Could this engine operate with that front cover off?

In August 1944, members of the French Resistance stand guard over an abandoned German train carrying four Tiger tanks.
These tanks, are believed to have belonged to sPzAbt 503 (the 503rd Heavy Panzer Battalion).
The Tiger I tanks were among the most feared armoured vehicles of World War II, known for their thick armour and deadly 88mm gun, making them a significant threat on the battlefield.
The train, abandoned during the chaotic retreat of German forces as Allied forces advanced through France in the summer of 1944, would have been carrying these tanks to reinforce positions or transport them for repairs.View attachment 4107474
The front isn't off, it is open. You can see just a bit of it on the tight side.

Here is a slightly different angle:

I think it has been shot up. The air tank is at an angle, the smokeboox door latch is bent, the cab front and floor are mangled.

There's quit a bit of gun camera footage taken during WWII of U.S. aircraft strafing steam trains out there on Youtube. If the boiler is hit, BOOM!
