Canadian Pacific's Slocan Local takes a barge to work. The tug IRIS G is just departing Rosebery, British Columbia, en route south on Slocan Lake to Slocan City, where the local will unload for its trip back to Nelson. The date is June 13, 1975. This incredible operation no longer exists.

I used to know an old guy that worked for a local railroad, the NJI&I (created by the Singer Sewing Machine Co.), and he worked in a small signal tower for many years. It was bigger than that one, but only by about double. He had a job as a watchman at the newspaper I worked for. A lot of older gentlemen that lost local factory jobs and their pensions (Studebaker was the biggest) ended up working as watchmen at local companies.

We used to have two. One was the South Shore interurban, and the other was just a freight line that made a slow curve down the middle of a street. I recall riding in a car in the snow with my mom driving and her left front tire got caught in the groove between the rail and the pavement, and it pulled her across the center line and into the path of an oncoming car. Minor fender bender. I think it was the first car accident I was ever in.
