When I worked in a small town as a carmen, I resided about a 1/3 of a mile and tad higher from a double main line, the screech of wheels and rumble of those power-heads is etched in my memory. Plus that smell of coal dust and diesel exhaust.

A Commonwealth kit for converting a wooden passenger car to a steel underframe. (Minus the wooden passenger car, which rotted and collapsed). The Great Northern’s Jackson Street shops did a lot of these conversions in the 1920s. I seen passenger car parts but they were gone from the main lines i worked near by the time I was there..

Slug in Lafayette, IN last Saturday. It works the yards in the area. This is near the Subaru plant.

I looked at the history of it a bit. It started life as an Alco in the early 70s before being converted to a slug. There are quite a few pictures on-line of it when it belonged to ConRail.
