Amtrak derailment about 10:15 last night due to striking a truck stuck on the tracks. Minor injuries only, so that's good. This is about 30 miles NW of us.

Retired mine rail is laying everywhere at some locations.

On the abandoned rails I walk on around here, there’s a few spots with thousands of feet of long sections of rail just laying there. Can‘t believe nobody will retrieve them.

Maybe unused, not abandoned.

Or cost of retrieval is greater than income from sale of scrap rail.

When truly abandoned, railroads often request bids from scrappers and let them deal with removal and sale of ties, rail, and hardware.
