So I wonder why it was a narrow guage?

They started out to build as narrow gauge. At one point in the book they discussed converting it to standard. In reality, very difficult terrain to cover, lots of hills etc.

Here in the UP the logging tracks were standard, but the mines used narrow gauge within the immediate mine area..

There are a number of narrow gauge rements around here. I think most were used for logging.
From everything I've read over the years, narrow gauge was less expensive for a number of reasons. Tighter curves allowed shorter distances. The rails were usually lighter weight, therefore less expensive. Heck, even shorter ties add up to $$ when you use millions of them.
