If you didn't catch it somewhere most all of UP's Big Boys logged a million miles or more while in service. Can't say that about the gas turbines, DD-40s and other of their heavy haulers. IMO the Challengers should not be overshadowed by the Alleghenys* and other bigger engines. btw, IIRC none did as well as compounds and few it any remained as such. (USN used triple compounds with both coal and oil-fired boilers.)

The "X" in the model number stood for experimental, as DDA40X Centennials were testbeds for technology that would go into future EMD products. UP frequently used these locomotives to haul heavy freights. Each unit successfully ran some 2 million miles (3.2 million kilometers) before they were retired from revenue service in 1985.

Thanks for that info. I have never been in Nebraska, but once drove down I29 just across the river. One of 5 states on my bucket list of states I haven’t been in. RI, NE, ND, ID, NE.

We've been to Omaha many times but its been years since the last time. Last time there we stopped at the strategic air command museum to see the sr-71 which is an aircraft I've read much about. Now we need to get down there agian??

If you like the SAC museum, you will love the Air Force Museum in Fairborn (Dayton), OH. They have the only surviving XB-70, which is the most impressive plane I'v ever seen. Expect to spend two days to see everything, and admission is free. There are several historic places in the Dayton area related to the Wright brothers also. Hulman Field, where the Wrights flew their early planes is only a few miles from the AF Museum.

When I was there the Cosmosphere in Hutchinson KS had an SR71 in the lobby. They also have the Apollo 13 Command Module.
