Work mode doesn't work

I recently bought a 2012 5600 (Series F). I've never been able to get work mode to engage. The indicator lights up during bulb test so I know the indicator works. The work button works for the setup functions so I know the switch is good. I understand work mode doesn't function when in high speed. Are there any other common conditions that would prevent it from turning on? I don't have an operator's manual, but I believe work mode should turn on just by pressing the work button, correct?

Now that I'm getting to know the machine a little better I've discovered that work mode is functioning. I can feel a change in the pedal response when I press the button, but for some reason the light just doesn't turn on. Must be a problem in the logic that controls the light.

I have a 5600-D. I've never really seen the advantage/use of "Work" mode. Yep, the pedal behaves differently. My running supposition is that when one is not in Work Mode you are in Play Mode.

Interesting. I find it to be very useful. Maybe the D series is tuned differently than the F series. I've only put about 10 hours on my TC, moving pallets with forks, moving logs with a grapple, moving stone with a bucket, I prefer work mode for everything except just traveling from point A to B. Finer control at low speeds and no difference in maximum speed. The only time I'm not in work mode is when I'm in high speed. I think the default mode has too much roll out after the pedal is released. Work mode responds more like my Brutus (mechanical hydro) and my 4120 (E-hydro).
