Scrambler82, the problem you seek to get resolved has been reported multiple times over the last couple years. The management knows about it and the ball's in their court. ;)

When it happens from a computer like it does from a phone, I'd bet the fix is in the chosen FONT for the site, browser, or OS and what TBN does with that .

btw, When I quote a post with those __s my keyboard doesn't have, the odd characters remain. I edit them out then, so don't use my quotes as examples.

The problem may be with smart quotes. Try turning them off on your device and posting again and see if the apostrophes come through clearly. Turn it on again and see if they are garbled.

That is where the problem is, the site does not handle angled quotes which are popular with many devices, this can also be seen if you copy and paste something using single or double quotes out of Microsoft word.
As I recall, the root cause is that TBN uses ASCII (128 characters) and many devices use unicode (a whole lot of characters).

On my Windows computer I usually write my TBN messages in another app before doing a copy/paste into TBN, then applying whatever formatting I want to add. I realized that apostrophes and double-quotes weren't being transferred as I wanted them, requiring editing in TBN after doing a "Preview Post", so I switched to composing messages in Notepad, the simple text editor available in all Windows versions. That solved the problem.

Here's a not too technical background on the issue:
Why Do I Get Odd Characters instead of Quotes in My Documents? - Ask Leo!

I'll guess that doing a Windows copy/paste isn't the only way to introduce the odd characters. If someone can describe how they're doing it (on a mobile device maybe?) I'll investigate a workaround for that platform.

(I sympathize with Grev (Scrambler82) about the hijacking of threads. It does take away some of the information sharing value of the forums when the on-topic messages get buried under a bunch of off-topic posts.)

I'm going to post this to test out some "alt-code" characters and see how they turn out. (using a desktop PC)

On a similar note, links tend to drop the zeros. Hence a $10,000 Pentagon hammer becomes a bargain at $1. It was frustrating at first, yet we've learned to live with it.

After it posts, you can click Edit Post at the bottom and type in the zeros. They will stay then.

I do that, but some people aren't aware of it or the initial problem.

So we understand... and I haven't read all of the postings, this Thread isn't to complain what people are doing... it is to state a problem with the Site's Postings.

As was stated, it may be a Mobile Posting problem, I do believe some of my postings have the problem too and I don't use a Mobile device to post to the Site.

I'm glad someone other than me has seen the problem, sometimes I think is my computer or maybe it is me !

Thanks to all for posting, we will see where the Site goes on the problem.

Again, as I have read, this isn't against anyone in particular, just the Site's Methods of Postings.

Almost all most posts are done from an iPad. Apostrophes don’t appear correct when I post but if I edit the post from the iPad the post then appears correct.

I was raised in what are now called the dark ages, prior to 1960. We learned proper English composition starting in the 6th grade. i took English as a HS freshman, 1950, and was bored stiff as the teacher had nothing new from what I learned in grammar school. Most of what I write comes out in conformance, but I do make mistakes. The last 30 years I have been appalled at how many so called educated (college schooled) people cannot even properly construct a simple sentence. I have done technical writing for 40 years+ and subscribe to the fact we have to write documents so a 6th grader can understand the text. Modifiers are a no no in technical writing, especially prepositional phrases. 9 times out 10 a prepositions can be eliminated.

Here on TBN the biggest problem I have is long winded compound sentences and lack of good paragraphing. A whole page w/o a paragraph break, I get lost in the verbiage after 3 -4 sentences.

Give folks a break, most write as they talk instead of composing what they say. This is not English class. Read between the lines and extract the meat and ignore the rest. Schools need to get back to English and get away from political propaganda.
