A few weeks ago I started looking at chippers and pricing them both locally and on the internet. At some point in my search I learned of the Wallenstein BX42 chippers. After a lot of reading and research I figured this was the best machine for me. Then I need to figure out who I wanted to order it through and I found Woodward Crossings (WC) in PA. After several calls and Emails I ordered my chipper. The order was very smooth and they were incredibly helpful. Right before my unit shipped WC gave me a call and let me know there was display/demo model available that would be a bit cheaper and save me some shipping if I was interested. I was so that was the one I went with. I felt it was nice they let me know about this and helped to save me some money. A few days later the unit arrived and was in great shape and super easy to get up and running (may 15-20 minutes one I had it unloaded from my truck). After attaching it to my Kubota B7610 (19 PTO HP) I started chipping limbs - IT WORKS GREAT!!! Better than expected! Even with a small tractor I can toss a 3 inch oak branch in this thing and out comes chips. If you had a larger tractor you could easily do the full 4" oak limbs of any length without a problem. I am at the bottom of the rated HP and find the only time my tractor struggles is if I throw a piece of 4" oak in there that is long. Short lengths seem fine and slow the tractor some and I noticed a 4" piece of soft wood if also not a problem.
Overall I think the chipper is VERY well built (also easy to clean or check the blades if you want to) and would highly recommend it. I also would strongly recommend contacting Woodward crossings after having purchased my unit form them because they were great to deal with!

I"ve used my BX42 quite a bit, and like it a lot. Mine does clog on twigs that have lots of leaves sometimes. I think the twigs get bent by the breakers, ( a bit too much clearance perhaps) and then unbend in the chute, and stop the leaves. I have the option of running my rear PTO at 960 rpm, and that solves the problem completely! That stuff spits through the chipper like corn through a goose! I have about 21 PTO hp, and perhaps with closer to the upper limits recommended there wouldn't be any problem at 540 rpm.

Chuck, you might check your clearances on the blades - I had similar issues til I reset them.

Do you think the Wallenstein BX42 would work on a Kubota BX24?

Thanks for the heads up on that, I'll check them.

There are folks here that run the BX 42 on the Kubota BX24, etc.

I've been looking at a couple of used bx42's up here. I emailed Wallenstein (maker of the chipper) to get HP rating. Territory Manager said tractor needs to be between 35-40hp to run efficiently at max capacity.

Now I've read that smaller tractors run the bx42 but like its been said here, you can get away with soft material. Hardwoods might require some monitoring on the intake.

I run mine on a B7610 with (I think) 19 PTO HP. It works good for about 3" stuff and short 4" pieces are also ok. If it is a long oak 4" piece (say 10') I wouldn't have the HP but at that length I cut it for starter wood. Softwoods (pine) I can pretty much feed it anything I can get down the chute. I love it and have no problems with the capacity or ability of the unit. would recommended it.

I betcha the BX42 on BX24 would be anything better then the little 8 hp portable unit I been trying to use. right sized pto or not, trying to chip green 1 inch brush in the 8hp is slow going, stopping event. I am sure it would dbe faster and easier with BX42. can anyone here confirm that ?
