I just purchased a used woods RM990 mower deck. It mows like crap because I found out today it spins in the wrong direction clockwise. Apparently shortly after it was purchased new they replaced the gear box with the wrong one. Has anyone ever had the same issue and if so does anyone have a good solution? A new woods gear box from my local dealer is almost $500 IMG_1360.JPG

Can you get blades that cut in the opposite direction they do now?

If the rest of the mower is in good condition (not rusted out) and you aren't in too deep so far that mower that mower is worth spending some money on. I talked to a man a few months ago about some parts from a rm990 if you want his name and # PM me and I'll give them to you. He is in Missouri. lt190b

Not talking about flipping them. If it's set up for ccw (counter clock wise) then see if you can't from some CW blades. Maybe they have something like that out there?

Messicks has a gearbox 1003409 for $400. If it was me I would bite the bullit and get the mower running like it was designed.

I have had my RM990 for many years and it runs great, just replaced blades from time to time and the belt a couple of times. Its a really good mower when running correctly.

Good luck.

Looks like the same gear box as is on mine. Mine is the RM990-3 , hold on until tonight and I well give you some ifo that might well help. If the right blades and right side up that mower mows great. BTY you only have one choice of blades. I well look and see if the pinion gear is in front or back of the gear box, and see if you change that.

Thanks guys this one definitely has me scratching my head.

With the PTO turning CW that puts the blades turning CCW with the pinion gear in the front side of the gear box. The gear box can not be changed, on the back side there is not enough room for the pinion gear to mount back there. I can't think of anyway that the belt could be put on wrong. The only thing it can be is the blades upside down or some how the wrong blades, or the PTO on the tractor going CCW. Can that be change from CW to CCW on the tractor? The 990 mows a lot better then my BX2660. You can pull the top cover and see where the pinion gear is (front or back).

One other thing way off the wall, How many blades are on that mower?

Buy a set of blades for an RD990.
RickB, is the idler pulley on the rd990 on the opposite side of the drive pulley as the rm990? If so would the rm990 still not mow very good. Maybe someone put the rd gearbox on the rm?

Post the model # and ser. # of the mower. We know it's a 990 but it well look something like this RM990-?. Also is that a model # plate on top of that gear box? I'm also have the same ? as IT190b on the spring loaded idler. The rm is on the side and the rd on the other side. The rd has a smaller pinion gear,so maybe the pulleys are a little larger to make up the blade speed.

The only thing I know about an RD990 is the blades are a mirror image of those used on an RM990. Had a customer buy a set of RM990 blades from me for the RD990 he bought somewhere else. His results were like yours. But he knew it all, right up to the point where he figured it out.

Thanks RickB....I might have to try the RD990 blades before I go and invest 400 on a new gear box

Did you pull the cover off to see where the pinion gear is?
