If you can get access to a press here is what you can try. Get some thick pieces of steel and cut them to fit between the gear and the house. Wedge them in there and then press the shaft from the end. Basically the steel pieces would hold the gear in place against the housing. The shaft would be pressed through.

Unfortunately, this is where the bottom of that shaft rests. There is no access to the back.

I didn’t notice that. All else fails drill a 3/4 inch hole through the housing. Press it out. Weld a plug over the hole or tap it for a pipe plug.

Not a bad idea. I’m going to block the gear from the front side to see if the clamps have too much play. The gears are already meshed so I don’t want to pull against the output gear. If I still can‘t get it, I guess the next best option would be to take it to a local machine shop and see what they can do with it.

I will add one suggestion when you have the puller tight use a pneumatic hammer with a blunt tip (chipping gun) on the gear. This seems to help tremendously without danger of busting anything, maybe shakes rust loose.

I actually got it off earlier. I‘ll remember that tip for the next time. Thanks.

Success! I felt like the clamps might have to much play so I put a bolt and nut in there between the gear and the front of the housing. Then I cranked on the gear puller as hard as I could and then tapped the gear with a 3 pound hammer a few times. I found when I did that it must have moved a tiny bit because I could tighten the puller bolts about 1 1/2 turns. After doing this repeatedly for a half hour or so, it came far enough out to move of the way of the smaller gear and output shaft. I haven’t pushed it completely out because I’m not replacing the gears. I just needed to be able to get to all 4 bearings, which I can now do.

Thanks to all for your advice. I now have some good ideas to use the next time I have to pull something like this loose.
