Woods M5-4 - Any stats? Able to find age?

After wasting a few hours driving to pickup a cutter, only to find out the seller listed the size incorrectly, I'm doing a little more homework on this one.

Unfortunately, the Woods site has a link-error on the M5-4 manual. And tractordata appears to only cover tractors.

Anyone able to help me find data on the M5-4? (confirm size, hp, rpm, etc.)

Is it possible to find the age from the serial number?

What is the difference between their -4 and -3?

Any value comments are welcome also.

I appreciate the help.

I suppose the "Vs" part of this thread, is for $100 more (or so) I can get an old JD 60" rotary cutter.

Looks like the M-5 series were manufactured in the 80's and 90's. The dealer asking prices were $500 to about $1000, so it appears they hold their value (remarkable for an implement). All the reviews I read indicated happy owners.

Since these are not current production, the manual probably isn't available as a download. However, can't hurt to call Woods Equipment and ask.

As far as the $100 difference between the Woods and Deere...I'd go for the one closest to my home. I don't think you'd see much difference in the quality of manufacture if they're equivalent duty (light, medium or heavy duty) cutters.

I was able to pick up the Woods for $450. Looks to be in ok to good working condition with a little rust and a few dings. I appreciate the help, it's a bit tough to be a novice and buy used gear, but this site and helpful people like yourself are a valuable resource.

Someone gave me an M-4 (pretty sure that's the one)... I open the top of the gearbox and saw there was milky oil (water mixed in). so I had to change it out it. Did not use it much, ended up buying a 5' landpride... just check the oil.
