Hello All,

I just got my new to me 7500 backhoe going today, and did a test dig. It came with a 24" bucket, but I also bought a 12" bucket. I did a test trench with the 24", and it seemed like that it was way too much bucket, as it wouldn't bite in float on my clay soil. I had to use down pressure to get it to bite, and it wouldn't pull through very well. It would run out of hydraulic pressure. It has the PTO pump.

Does anyone have any experience with a 24" bucket on these Woods backhoes? It seems to me that the 12" should go better in my clay, but it would save a bunch of time for me if I could get the 24" to work.

I've got the same issue with my Farttrac hoe that came with my 360tlb.
It's got the pto pump and runs out of pressure really quickly. It feels like the bypass valve is set wrong. Everyone that runs it tells me the same thing.
I think small hoe's have limited capability.

24" seems like an awfully big bucket except for sandy soil. I think 12" - 16" would maximize the power of that size hoe. My new backhoe http://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/attachments/86935-new-backhoe.html has a 16" bucket. On hard ground, where the stabilizers don't dig in real well, the hoe can start to drag the tractor if it hooks onto a large rock. I realize now I could have flipped them over for better bite, but it still shows the power it has.

i thought a 24" bucket on something that size was more suited to digging out the bottom of the road ditch or some other kind of soft digging.

so its used? how are the teeth, oil filter new? correct technique? My setup works well for what it is.

I have a 12 and 24" for my 9000 both work great. I would think the 24" is a bit much for the 7500 unless the ground is soft. Good technique can make a significant difference as well.

Thanks for the replies.

My unit is used, but only has minimal hours on it. Everything is about new looking, except it has sat out side for a couple of years. I just replaced the filter and hydraulic oil before I fired it up.

I agree that my technique is needing more practice. It's been years since I used a backhoe. However, I have only used a large backhoe before (Case 580K), and just dropping the bucket on float was enough to get it to dig, and it would dig as much dirt as it could hold on pulling in the dipperstick. Seems with this unit, it needs some down pressure to start the dig, then the angle of the bucket needs to be just right to shave a small about of soil, then as it hits a larger amount of soil it runs out of pressure to pull. Granted, this is heavy clay I'm talking about. It is really hard to dig it with a post hole spade, let alone a large bucket. (I need to jump on the 4" post hole spade with all my weight to get it to push a short way into the ground, so it doesn't surprise me it cant penetrate using the weight of dipperstick/boom only)

I may put a gauge on it just to check the pressure. It has plenty of flow as it moves quickly until it hits the relief valve, (or pump runs out of pressure)

Any idea what shape your PTO hydraulic pump is in? I may be wrong, but I believe one fo the signs of wear on these units is the gradual loss of max pressure.

Having said that, I own a Woods 7500, and I believe a 24" bucket is not a good match for "new" digging, especially in clay soils. I'd consider it more of a "clean-out bucket" for cleaning out ditches, or "re-digging" soils which were previously (and recently) dug.

The PTO pump should be OK, since the hoe has probably less than 50 hours use on it. However, it's been sitting awhile, so anything is possible.

I think I'll put a gauge on it just to be sure. Anyone happen to know what pressure it should have?

I'll also put the 12" bucket on this weekend and report the results.

Thanks,

Jeff

Another quick question; I've seen some posters note that if their hoe hits something solid, then they end up dragging the tractor toward the hole. Mine definitely doesn't do this; it clearly runs out of pressure before it moves the tractor. However, I have it on a midsize CUT (JD 970), and dug the FEL blade in the ground in the front. (Lifted the front with FEL blade vertical). I don't know what size tractor these other posters have. I could see a lighter tractor without the front dug in getting pulled.
