Woodpecker Hammering On The Raingutter

They are really fond of my chimney cap. Normally, I've had at least one pileated Woodpecker each year that will wake me each morning with the hammering. Those big woodpeckers can raise the dead. The first time I heard it, I thought somebody was shooting my house.

The first morning one of those big pileated types started hammering on the gutter I jumped out of bed and headed for the shotgun. It sounded like someone outside opened up with a submachine gun. I am used to it now, but it sure is loud.

I get up to three pileated's at a time at our suet feeders. No problem with them hammering on the gutters though the downy's and hairy's do. What they do tear up are our flowering cherry trees. We have to wrap the trunks with that sticky elastic wrap we get for patching up cuts on the horses.

Could be worse I suppose. We don't get sapsuckers here. They are the ones that ring a tree with holes about a quarter of an inch apart then collect the insects that feast on the sap.

It's quite funny to read these remarks about the woodpeckers hammering on gutters, chimney caps and the noise they make. I thought I was singled out because that's what happened to me. I use to have the most beautiful red Western Red Cedar, tongue & groove siding with cedar soffits on my house, that was until almost every year I had to patch or replace corner boards & siding. I now have Clay colored Vinyl Siding. Oh the suet cakes didn't work for me, pellet gun did but may times damage was already done, oh I hated those birds.

Had one hammering on the metal ridge cap of an old house I rented that had a slate roof. It drove me crazy at about 5-6am every morning. One day I took a tennis ball and winged it as hard as I could and amazingly hit the bird and knocked it off the roof cap! Olympic gold shot for sure. Slept peacefully thereafter. True story.:thumbsup:

Have you got a pellet rifle? That will deter the little pecker.

Be careful. Woodpeckers are protected under Federal law. Killing one is a crime.

Red headed woodpeckers like to hammer on electric transformer on pole which located near our bedroom window at day break. there some mornings I like to pull his tail feather out.
