I am building a new shop (27x24') to replace an old worn out carport. I am getting close to time to trim it out and start to put siding up. As far as siding I am going to use Hardi-plank. I wanted to trim it out with wood from my friends sawmill. I have my choice of oak, pine or poplar. My question is am I just inviting years of battling the carpenter bees if I use lots of freshly dried wood trim and accents in shops finish? I love the more rustic look, but I do not want to deal with carpenter bees for years to come. Any advice?

You are using a lifetime siding. Why not use Hardi cement fiber trim? If you do go with wood, use oak. Bees do not like hardwood very well. They love pine & poplar.

A friend trimmed his house with pine milled from trees that had grown on his property. Some of his friends were incredulous--expected the pine to last 3-5 years. Forty years later the trim is fine. I attribute that to the facts the pine was native grown (at its own rate) as opposed to plantation grown (forced and rushed to market), air dried for years with stickers, and primed on all 6 sides before installation.

Hopefully your sawmill owner is a good enough friend to ensure you get "good stuff" in whatever you settle on, and you take the time to prime the all sides including the ends cut during installation.

I love the contrast between a nice colored siding and wood trim. And wood trim would be cheaper in this case cause my buddy has a bunch laying around. Good to know about the oak! Thanks for your reply!

When I built my house, I used Hardie and trimmed out my windows and doors in PT wood that i stained to make it look nice. I liked the look when I did it, but the wood became a never ending issue of warping, bowing, and growing mold. After ten years of losing that battle, I took it off and installed Hardi Trim. It's not as fancy, but it's never going to take up any more of my time.

I have clients with cedar on their homes that looks really nice. I make a bunch of money replacing their cedar because of the damage squirrels and bees do to it. I have a few clients that it's so bad that they are no longer going to fix it, they are saving up to tear it all off and have me install Hardie. Problem is that these are jobs that will be well over ten grand to do, and they are all elderly people with fixed incomes.

Dually noted Eddie! Thanks for the reality check. Ok I guess I will do hardie. I just hope the price hasn't skyrocketed like all the other building materials. Does anyone know if Hardie prices are going up?

That was our goal in our new house build. Minimal upkeep.
