Hey all,
I recently bought a new to me house and property. It had a Granny Stove in the basement and the seller burned wood for heat. It appears to be ducted through the furnace which is great. I would like to have it inspected prior to using as the House was vacant for a few years prior to be buying it. Any suggestions? I’m in the St. Louis MO area

Start with your local fire department, they should be able to point you in the right direction. If the stove doesn't have a UL rating your insurance company might not like/approve it.

It has a UL rating. I work for the fire department and we don’t offer inspection services for this sort of thing. We suggest using a cleaning service but I don’t know of any that work on stoves. They are pretty rare in our area.

You might check with one of the online home adviser service sites like Angie's list etc...they supposedly have unbiased referrals...

contact a local store that sells them.....if they don't service them then they will know who does.......Jack

Your local chamber of commerce may be able to point you in the right direction too.

Chimney sweeping (with certification for insurance purposes) is fairly seasonal work, so the person who does it may have a "handyman" or "cleaner" business going on with wood-stove service as a sideline.

Do the services pay a fee to be listed on these sites?
or is it satisfied user that lists the service.

And if the first who does the verification.

I once called the BBB for a reference of a contractor and discovered that I had to be a paid up member to do so.

Perhaps I am wrong and Angie is a totally free public service and un prejudiced.

Honestly I've never personally used one of the services... and I only cited A.L. as a name I had heard...but for someone unfamiliar with the community it seems like a good place to start...most of the sites have FAQ pages that answer common questions about their services...
