Can I hook up a standard hydraulic wood splitter to a BX? Thinking about getting a BX2200, and wondering if it'll help with this chore, too.

You could hook up a splitter. However, keep in mind how much flow your system has.

I looked into this for my B8200; I found the 6gpm pump rather insufficient compared to the higher flow pump on the stand alone units. The low gpm would result in a very slow splitter cycle time.

I've thought about this too, for the tractor of my dreams (still in my dreams /w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif). I found a couple of splitters with their own pumps, powered by the PTO, so they are independent of your hydraulic system. Sorry I didn't save the URLs, but you should be able to find them with a web search. I doubt the BX has enough hydraulic flow to give satisfactory results otherwise.

Hmm, I never thought of that. Run one off the PTO.

Does anyone out there have any exprience with a PTO driven wood splitter, and do you think the BX2200 has enough power to do that?

That would depend on the splitter, but most portable splitters (that I have seen) have an engine a lot smaller than the one on a BX. So I would guess that for many of them, the answer would be "yes".

By golly More than enough power, (depending on the displacement of the pump). I use a Cessna 20 gpm pump (salvaged off an old Case loader), hooked to a PTO coupler, running at 1000 rpm (pump maximum speed is 1200). I can get cycle times (up and back) of less then 10 seconds, but I usually throttle it down, or run in the 540 rpm setting. Usually I run the Kubota at 2000 rpm and go with the slower cycle times. (Using a 4" cylinder, peaking at 1500psi.)

I once tried (it was a learning experience) splitting gum, or should I say 'splintering' gum. Results were not very pretty, but the power was there.

The advantage of the Kubota is fuel economy. When I used the setup on my Case SC (19 HP) I'd use at least 2 gallons (gas) per hour (usually more). A friend using a B&S 10HP aircooled (very similar setup) is using about 1 gallon of gas per hr. Using the bota, its less than 1/2 gal of diesel per hr.

Steve, where do I find one of these PTO driven models? Can I rent them? Seems like everything i see to split wood, is hydraulic.... Are the PTO models out there, or are they always built for self use, by someone like you?
