wood splitter

I have a separate gas powered wood splitter. Had rented it a few times and then asked the rental company about buying it. Got it for a reasonable price and it has a nice large table for placing the rounds on. I like it because as I am getting older and need to watch the back :( I use my backhoe to lift the larger rounds onto the wood splitter. I think it depends on your needs, if you don't need to use the tractor for anything else while you have the PTO wood splitter on then it would be a good option for you.

I have a 3pt splitter from T.S.C. It works vertical or horizontal. I stand it beside a post at My tractor shed and hook a chain to it. I hook the the Hoses to My tractor. The big chunks
of Wood are busted in the upright positon. T.S.C. sells them for $699.95. I think it is a good buy.

Check with your local dealer. Many times they have Different options you can look into. Plus they can stand behind the choice you make. This way you are not left high and dry if you even need help.

I split a lot of wood with a tractor mounted, pto operated, unicorn style, bark buster splitter. 20 some cords in the last few years. I like running the tractor as much as the next guy but would much much rather run a stand alone splitter and throw the splits into the bucket of the tractor to take to the stacks.

This is a great thread for me to watch. I will most likely purchase a splitter this fall.

I want this one :)

Seriously , I have been doing research and looking at the following 2

Splitfire (The Company is out of Canada)

Split-Fire Sales Inc. :: 3403 Woodsplitter :: Quality Built. High Performance. Split-Fire - Your Best Choice

Powerhorse (Through Northern Tool)

Powerhorse Horizontal Log Splitter — 3-Pt. with 4in. x 24in. Cylinder, 20 Tons of Force | Log Splitters | Northern Tool + Equipment

If anyone has one of these , Input as to performance would be welcomed.

If you're interested, take a look at the link below. I bought the 16T Ramsplitter new off of ebay. I think for the price, you will be very impressed. I added the slip on 4 way wedge to the purchase, which works nice when you have the right diameter logs. They also make a 20T splitter.

I have owned a horizontal 3-PT Ramsplitter (blue) and also bought off of ebay for around seven years now. We heat the house soley from our woodstove so the machine has gotten a lot of use, all of which has been flawless. Just mark your hydraulic hoses so the dentent lever action is automatic on the roll back so you can be picking up the next log to split without tending the lever. Vary the deck height from time to time to change your stooping position-saves on constant back strain. Important to me as I am 6'-4". Use your PTO-you paid for it!

Whats the GPM of your tractor?
Whats your cycle time using the 16 Ton Ramsplitter?

I am looking at the 20 ton ramsplitter for my 955. The cycle time at 2500psi/7.2gpm will be a little slow at 25 seconds, but you rarely cycle it the whole way. The 16 ton would be around 18 seconds, but it only takes 20 inch logs.

And with regards to cycle time, there is a big difference between the machine keeping up with you and you keeping up with the machine. You tend to get hurt while doing the latter. You only need the splitter to be ready for you with the next round. Who cares if the ram is in the up position for 8 seconds?

In a previous thread, somebody posted a link to a table that shows force and cycle time based on cylinder size and hydraulic flow.
