Won\'t Start

While mowing today with my 2 year old Farm Pro 2420 (54 hours) the tractor slowed and the engine quit. The fuel gauge quit last year so I'm not 100% sure I ran out of fuel. Assuming I did I filled the tank installed a new fuel filter and bled out all the lines starting at the filter all the way to the injectors 10 to 15 times it still won't start. No fuel at all comes out of the injector pump lines I'm starting to think my injection pump has gone bad. The motor runs fine with a small squirt of starting fluid. I've ran heavy equipment for years and when we would run out of fuel it was always just a matter of bleeding out the lines and firing it back up. Help

Re: Won\'t Start

Noticed the post was deleted from the other forum. Thought I 'd just duplicate my reply here.
Don't know about this model tractor but on some of our newer (post 1970) JDs there is an electric solenoid on the pump that has to energize to "turn on" the pump. If the key switch goes bad or the wire from the dey switch to the pump gets broken, the tractor will die dince the fuel is effectively cut off. This is just what happened to me a year or so ago on a 4320 John Deere. I ran a wire from the battery to the connector on the top of the pump. Tractor ran fine after that until I could hunt down the broken wire/bd switch/etc. Usually it is a not the solenoid on the pump but a wire that has worked in two or something like that. Hope this helps.

Re: Won\'t Start

No solanoid on my pump. The fuel shutoff is manual

Re: Won\'t Start

Hmmm....Ok, then I guess you have checked the linkage on the kill switch to make sure it isn't in a bind or something like that? I really don't think there is something wrong with the pump (I hope not for your sake). Anytime I have had a mechanical pump go bad it has been over a period of time. Surging, dribbling out the exhaust and such. I guess you are getting fuel to the pump?

Re: Won\'t Start

reg52,you most likley have trash in the screens of the fuel lines .First place to look is at the glass sediment bowl there is a screen inside the tank,2- screen inside the bolt that connects the fuel line to the pump, see if you have good flow from fuel tank to pump, check the oil in the injector pump, did you pump the primer on the pump?It should be a simple fix,I doubt the pump went out but it is possible

Re: Won\'t Start

I agree with the trash. I was mowing with my big NH 7610s this weekend.. tractor suddenly lost power.. went to an idle.. then died.. was trash in the screen in the tank, and a bit of water.

To the original poster. Are you getting fuel at the bleede points all along the way up untill the pump? but then not at the injectors themselves?

Re: Won\'t Start

After you check all the in line filters and primed the injector pump you can remove the pump output lines one at a time at the pump. With the engine turning over each of the three lines should squirt about 1 half inch high stream of fuel. If you ran out of fuel it seems more likely you just have to fool around with it long enough to purge everything.

Re: Won\'t Start

also you said you changed the fuel filter? then I would hope you filled it with fule before re-installing it .? like others probably trash in the screens. the hand pump does no tpump it though the filter & injector only up to it. make sure the injector pump oil is ok too, there is a level of oil in the pump on back there are 2 metric bolts sometimes wired up suing safety wire. 10 mm heads. Check JOHNS"S web site lots of injector info there & bleeding info.

there have been a few cases of sheared off injector pump bolts or loose ones which let the timing change (gears between drive of pump & engine).
