If my voltage regulator on my 8n sticks when I shut it down, would that cause it not to start??

If you have a good battery with a good charge you don't even need the charging system. It will just run until the battery goes dead or you turn it off. That can be all day. If you can find one, put your battery on an external charger and charge it up.

I know it will run but first it has to start. This thing will turn over but will not start. It was running fine when I parked it.

If it turn's over same as usual,the regulator is a mute consideration. If it turns over but slow like battery is weak,the regulator "MIGHT" have caused a drain on battery. As suggested above,disconnect regulator,charge battery and go about business as usual to see if problem gos away.

It's a basic really old gasoline engine. Do you have spark? If not pull the cap off the distributor and make sure the points are opening and closing. If they are be sure they are not pitted and the gap is set correctly. Sometimes things seem to move on their own. Do you have a crack in your distributor cap? Can you create a spark manually by opening and closing points? This is pretty basic stuff and I don't mean to sound as if I'm talking down to you but many people don't know how this stuff works any more. Do you have fuel to the carburetor? Is it possible the float is sticking? My old Ford truck does sometimes. If you have fuel and spark the engine "should" run. Oh, how's the air cleaner? I forgot - it needs air, too.

As Worty said,shouldn't take much to get it going again. Is distributor on side or front?

Quick and dirty trick used to eliminate electrical is a whiff of starting fluid and then crank... if it starts 99% fuel issue.

If it makes no difference look to ignition... mostly points.

Sometimes I was told and old car ran fine when parked... then no spark when I tried to start.

Rubbing a business card between closed points often did the trick... the cardstock was rough enough to "Polish" the points.

A small piece of folded 320 grit paper will work lots better.

I think ultrarunner is on the right path. If the points in the regulator are closed, the ignition circuit is not complete. I think

Good easy way to check the spark is to purchase oneself a couple of spark testers , i own three as i usually will misplace one s-l225.jpg that will quickly eliminate the spark, ether (starting fluid ) will eleiminate the fuel problem...
