Fish - please take a look at the link. Most of the cases in this report are from North America, but there is a little bit of world history included. If you do more digging into world history you will uncover many, many more discriptions of human-wolf encounters, espically in Europe. Hey, I'm not trying to get all "red-riding hood" like, but the perspective that wolves are cute & cuddly is simply naive. We are slowly learning this in Northern Wisconsin. People & Wolves live to colsely here.

Sorry I have to remind myself to be nice. I am just mean. Heres some info I copied.

11. How big are wolves? (top)

The average length (tip of nose to tip of tail) of an adult female gray wolf is 4.5 to 6 feet; adult males average 5 to 6.5 feet. The average height (at the shoulder) of a gray wolf is 26 to 32 inches.

The average length (tip of nose to tip of tail) of an adult red wolf is 4.5 to 5.5 feet. The average height (at the shoulder) of an adult red wolf is about 26 inches.

12. How big is a gray wolf's track? (top)

The size of a wolf's track is dependent on the age and size of the wolf, as well as the substrate the track was made in. A good size estimate for a gray wolf's track size is 4 1/2 inches long by 3 1/2 inches wide. In comparison, a coyote's track will be closer to 2 1/2 inches long by 1 1/2 inches wide. Only a few breeds of dogs leave tracks longer than 4 inches (Great Danes, St. Bernards, and some bloodhounds).

Greatrandini,

I think we share the same view that people tend to think wolves are allot bigger then they really are.

I know that they are capable of getting up to 140 pounds, but humans are known to be 7ft tall. It's extremely rare and no where near the norm.

When people see a wolf and say it's over a hundred pounds, it sets of red flags for me.

Every year a few hundred plus pound wolves are killed in Alaska and Canada, but those are the extremes. And when it happens, it's news!!! Sort of like the 70 inch moose. They are out there, but nobody ever expects to actually see one, much less harvest one.

To see two wolves that are over a hundred pounds each is like going to the mall and seeing two people over seven feet tall. It just doesn't happen.

Not knowing anything else about the original post but the size of the two animals tells me that it's extremly probable they are cross breads that were probaby pets at one time.

I may have missed it in previous posts but the danger of a wolf is not in it's size but in the strength of its jaw. The clamping power is just incredible. We have a wolf preseve not far from us and they have a list comparing different animals clamping power in psi and the wolves is off the chart.

The only breed of dog that has any success against wolves is the irish wolfhound. The IW is bigger, faster and just as strong. Plus it's what they were bred for. Even then they know to fight as a pack. Did I mention IW's are smart. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
