Wireless setup question

We have been using a Linksys wireless router for several years. When we set it up we did not configure the password option. I have tried to go back in through the Manage Wireless device to configure this but it seems to only manage how the laptops connects not change the device settings.

It's now out of the warranty and Linksys wants $49 to even discuss it with some guy from India. As I remember you had to go in through the web ISP address but I am not certain.

For many years I did not worry about no password but now days it is not a smart option.

Any ideas?

Instead of spend that 49 on support.. Go to best buy and a new one would be 60.. more later... I'm using my droid...

Not sure if you want to set up an administrator password or to set up wifi security WEP (old) etc...?

at any rate...open a browser and navigate to

192.168.0.1 if that does not work try

192.168.1.1

this will be the html (web page) interface of the router...

1) You have to be hooked to the router with ethernet. It will not allow configuration over a wifi connection.

2) Launch your browser and type in http://192.168.1.1 which should launch the router setup utility. It should be pretty obvious, but if you need a step by step, there is a good one at Linksys WRT54G Setup

I suggest using a WEP key for home use. There is a lower level of data security, but many smart phones, iPods, etc, will not handle WPA or WPA2

you can visit the Cisco site (they own Linksys) and enter the model # of your router and get the latest firmware upgrade for your model...

Linksys Support
