Winter Prep

Winters have been so mild here for the past few years about all I do is make sure I have a good snow brush in each vehicle, put the snow shovel by the back door, put the plow in the tractor and back it into the back garage. It gets so little use that I have to put a battery tender on it over the winter.
^^That about sums it up for me too. We have two warm days before cold hits so I will chew up the leaves in the yard with the GTs, then the batteries get pulled and the plows go on the Toolcat. The shovels need to be moved to the right locations. (y)

It must be me because I have had more held for moderation posts over the last few weeks than the previous almost 25 years here?
That's odd. I'd be hard pressed to point to a controversial or antagonistic post you've ever made.
Some weird algorithm here that affects users with 11 letter handles?

Have 20 facecord of firewood in the woodshed, put tire chains and the back blade on the tractor. New tires all around on the Subaru (next week). The wife's dandelion and blueberry wine is all bottled up and in the wine cellar. Well, we really don't have a wine cellar in our 20 X 24 log cabin but under our bed works out fine.

What's this winter thing you speak of?
I thought I would add some pellets to the stove but it was still full from last year. I don't envy you guys.

Yep… I’m hearing how cold it’s getting here… dips down into the high 40’s overnight and lie 60’s in the day…

I have about the same amount of firewood. It may get used. Early climate indication is polar high stratospheric temperature which may push the polar subsidence zone south. We may get some nasty cold waves this winter. My pump house is insulated, but not impregnable. When it gets down to 15 degrees or so I like to keep a little propane heater going in there. I have five 20 lb. tanks, four of them full. I'll test the heater to make sure it works.

At least the house won't be cold.

I didn't mention long johns. I go for layers. Long johns and canvas pants on the bottom, long sleeve T-shirts for the first layer on top.

I found long sleeve hoody T-shirts on Amazon that are cut just like a hoody sweatshirt out of T-shirt cloth. I have a Filson waterproof duck hunter bill cap with ear flaps that will fit over the T-shirt hood. It really keeps the wind off my neck. Add a sweatshirt, hoody sweatshirt, hooded jacket, and lined gloves and I'm comfortable in really nasty weather. If I head to the coast, the whole thing gets covered with this amazing Carhartt rain coat that breathes but does not leak.

And the beard. A beard really keeps your face warm. A ski mask over the beard keeps it even warmer.

It's a lifestyle choice. Lots of people hunker down in winter and spend a lot of time inside. I love being outdoors. Dress for the weather and go.

My driveway markers is grass. When I see it show up on the rear blade or in the end loader. Not the greatest method but we have gotten very little snow the last few years.

I mowed my leaves again yesterday. Found a cherry and apple tree behind the garage that had been broken down by heavy snow a couple weeks ago. Got out the chainsaw and cut all that mess down. Pruned grape vines. Emptied flower pots. Went to outlet stores and bought a couple pairs of flannel lined jeans..... and 12 bags of cookies.

That should hold me well into winter. 😛

For some reason my reply was held for moderation and never released?

Odd because all I said is I don’t have firearms quoting you.

The management is working on it.

I mowed leaves over the last weekend also. Today I’ll take the mowing deck off for good and put the FEL for the winter. I’m not sure what I’ll put on the back, either my rear blade or ballast box on. We MIGHT get some bad weather Saturday but the local weathermen are cowards and don’t want to commit to anything now.

I put my mower on, took it off, put some forks on, took them off, put a bucket on, took it off, put the forks back on, took them off, put the mower back on, took the mower back off....

Quick attach and hydraulic power makes things pretty cushy. (y)

What I saw last night predicts that you are going to get a lot of snow in Central Illinois. I'm a few hours south of you and all we're gonna get is a lot of rain.

I'm slowly getting ready for winter. Last Thanksgiving we got 8"+ of snow and had to delay Thanksgiving dinner for 2 days. It's supposed to hit 50 tomorrow. I'll put the mower away and prep the tractor and UTV.

All the weather models are still showing most of the snow going north up by Arly. He always lucks out and gets the white stuff!
