Winter is around the corner

Watched 2 flocks of honkers with at-least 50 birds in each headed south today. Good sign that we will possibly have a cold wet winter like we used to.
We sure could use the rain here in Northern Cal. Guess we will see.

In October 4-5 (Sunday. Monday) 1987 the region got a big snow storm with 12-18" of snow. Most of the hotels were full of leaf peepers. The state highway agencies didn't expect it so no one was on duty, plow frames weren't mounted, plows were in storage etc. Quite a mess!

So now those agencies are ready to plow by this weekend. I'm going to mow next weekend, then stow the brush cutter and get out the winter equipment.

Looks like I may be running the fireplace next weekend when we wake up. That will make my wife happy, since she's been asking me if it was time yet every cool morning recently. Also means it's time to put my wood rack on the front porch and fill it up. Tried doing it today, but got tied up with other chores and then was cajoled to go get Mexican for early dinner.

Woodshed is almost full. Cut all my firewood early this year in anticipation of going deer hunting this year but the wildfires here in
Northern California, my hunting area that I wanted to hunt was still burning up north of here, but not as bad as next county
over where over 76,000 acres burned and about 1,000 structers burnt to the ground. Feel sorry for folks that lost everything.

When I lived in Maine, anytime after the second week of October, you had better be ready. It was a Karma thing because if you weren't ready it snowed big time and if the both the woodshed and larder were chock full it would be 70 into December. Plan on doing the winter prep in November and you paid a price for it.

In Ohio I've seen the township actually try to plow a half-inch of snow.

Came up this weekend to do some outdoor work before it got cold. It's 22 degrees with a dusting of snow...

My brother's best friend lives in Eastport. He liked my brother's car and floated the idea of replacing their 4x4 pickup with a car. "What would you want to do a damned-fool thing like that for?" :laughing:

I had to drive from Bucksport to Deere Isle after a snow storm and counted 22 pickups, 14 Subarus - and that was it.

Had our first fire yesterday morning, and another this morning. Went a lot better this morning; this idiot actually "closed" the damper when he thought he was "opening" the damper yesterday morning. Said idiot now will stick his head in the fireplace to verify damper position. Suspect sabotage from toddler during the summer months...
