I am doing a remodel on my kitchen and the wife wants a bigger window over the sink. What I would like to do is remove the 2 x 10 header and replace it with a glue laminated lumber. This will give me enough space to get a taller window but keep the same width. The span is 3'6", 1st floor of a 2 story home, outside load bearing wall. Any idea what size glue laminated beam I need?

Depends how much hight you're wanting to gain? the smallest width of LVL beams I have worked with are 2 x 10 same as a standard wooden 2x10, then they go next to a 3 x 10 which is what you need, you would then have to rip it down to what ever would be needed? however by doing so I cannot see how would be achieving any more strength then a sandwiched 2x? with plywood in between:cool: You could perhaps get some 1/2 steel plate and use instead of plywood, But again just how much hight we talking about? does the house have taller than 8 ft ceilings? Like 9 ft or higher? it could be as simple as removing the cripples, Is the second floor cantilevered out over the window? or even with the wall bellow? is there a roof hip above? or gable above?
