The wind chill is suppose to get -30 tonight and tomorrow morning here in the midwest. Don't mind the snow, but don't care much for the cold. You think I would be use to it buy now.

That chart reminds me of a book I read some time ago. It was called "Minus 148" and was the story of some mountain climbers on a particularly bad climb. They got the title from the wind chill chart they had with them at the time. Their chart only went to -148 and their conditions were actually worse than that! If I recall it was a fairly gruesome story with several of the expedition members being killed.

Well good thing the Wind Chill is just a "feels like" temperature.

Wind Chill and Heat Index are just nice little things the weather folks on TV like to throw around to make things seem worse than they really are.

If the temperature is 33 degrees, but the Wind Chill is say 20, water still won't freeze.

On another note, have you ever seen the Infomercial that is touting some miracle oil? They bring in about 15 people into a freezer that is -20 with an engine incased in a block of ice. They chip away at the ice and then start this engine -- AMAZING right? WRONG -- the engine within the ice is 32 degrees and protected from the -20 degree temperature.

This is why the citrus folks in Florida spray their trees with water when the temperature is going to fall below freezing -- they only expose the trees/fruit to 32 degrees and not lower temps.

Old vs New Wind Chill

True, but the actual temps are suppose to dip down to -11 and Craig and I won't have the benefit of being encased in ice to keep us warm /w3tcompact/icons/grin.gif.

Therefore you have a need to immediately install a temporary outdoor shower.
A small lawn sprinkler attached to a loader or backhoe ought to do the job nicely.

Well now, Dave. You know there's nothing that prevents ice from getting colder than 32F.

Heat of fusion - This is the heat that is released when liquid water freezes to solid ice. The amount of heat generated when water freezes is 1200 BTUs/gallon or 80 calories/gram of water frozen. As long as enough water is continuously applied to a plant, the heat generated when water freezes generally keeps the plant at or near 32°F (O°C).

For the past 2 seasons I've used sprinkler water as freeze protection for my plants. We had frost here during the first week of June. Saved me from losing just about everything. Used for crops such as strawberries, tomatoes, beans, cucumbers, peppers and squash vine crops too, as well as tree fruits.


Gotta wonder about that engine though.

In school, we would take a styrofoam container and put ice and water in it. Assuming it is "perfectly insulated" and as long as both ice and water existed together, this combination gave us an exact 32 degree reference temperture when conducting experiments.

When water is put in a freezer, the water's temperature would drop until it hit 32 degrees F. at which point it would remain at 32 deg. F until it is completely frozen. Then the temperature of the ice would begin to drop again.

In the case of produce, do they keep adding water to maintain an ice/water mix or do they quit adding water before the freeze threat is over?

Continuous irrigation is required to maintain a water film on the ice until air temperatures rise back above freezing.

The few times that I've had to watch for frost the low point usually occurs just before dawn. The temps pretty much go right back up above freezing as soon as the sun hits.
