OK, not sure where to post this and couldn't find anyting in a search and I'm as newbie as they come so here goes.
I finally bought a tractor, an L3130 (with FEL got it with 14 hours from an auction :) ). I liked this tractor in that it was the only type tractor I had ever driven (friend let me borrow his to rough cut about 4 acres of over grown pasture). He had a 5' Bush Hog brand rotary but his was GST. Reading the specs on most 5' rough cuts it appears they have a 25 pto hp minimum (some more). The HST on this model drops the PTO hp down to 24.0. Is there really no 5' rough cut I can use with this thing? If I have to drop down to 4' I will regret not getting a bigger machine and chalk this up as one of many of my expensive "life tuition" payments.... :(

Go with what you have! I happen to have both a 5' and a 6' shredder and use both behind my L3130 and don't have any problems. I do tend to use the 6' only on grassy areas. I should sell the 6' and put the money toward another implement but just haven't got around to it.

Tex,
Well that's the thing. I have not purchased a bush hog yet so I don't have anything (just the tractor).
I guess some more useful info would be that 'MOST' of my cutting will not be very tough stuff. Old overgrown pastures etc., but no doubt I want to be able to clear some wooded areas and would like it to be able to cut decent saplings etc... but again, if I bought the wrong animal, so be it. Just don't want to tear up anything. :(
Thanks again.

I have been using a Woods BrushBull 600 for 6 years now. Tractor is a 3410 hst and there is no shortage of power. I think your 3130 is fine.

I use a 5 foot rotary mower with no problem and my PTO power is less than yours, I used a 5 footer on my Ford 8N for 18 years. If it gets real thick and heavy I have to slow down but I can get through it.

I use a 6' rough cutter behind my L3130 HST with no problems as long as the grass is not too wet or thick. If it is I just slow down a bit. If you will be using it to clear out thick areas on a regular basis, a 5-fter would give you a little more power.

It will work jus fine. Be aggressive on the amount of times you mow and you should be fine.

I have a 5' King Kutter on my L3430 that runs just fine. I am sure the L3130 would be the same. A dealer near here has a rental L3130 with a 6' Rino Hog.

I run a 6' MD172 behind my L3400 (27.5 pto hp) and don't have any problems.
