will a cub cadet 149 move large hay bales?

The Cub Cadet 149 probably weighs about 600-700 lbs. No way it's going to move a round bale without tearing up the tractor or hurting the operator.

It is considered by some Cub Collectors as the best evolved design in the Cub Cadet line because it still had the open engine mounting, yet had the most advanced hydraulics and other features before International Harvester started making the "Quiet Line" series (eg 1200, 1400, 1600) that had the side panels over the engine to quieten them down. The 149 still had solid engine mounts that give no trouble unlike the rubber engine mounts that fail on the Quiet Line series.

If its in good shape, you've been given a great gift.

This is the same model tractor I have, but without the loader and backhoe. He says it has a lift capacity to full height of 1200 lbs and a breakout force of 2,000 lbs.
If it can move dirt around like packing peanuts, then it should be able to lift a bale of hay.

He might be lifting 500# of dirt with that loader, but I doubt its more. His other numbers are not correct (or if they are, they are very unsafe).
We have a Kubota B7500 with a LA302 loader (looks like this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MRmrlkF7Ehw)
It is rated to lift 770# to full height at the bucket pivot pins and it is rated at 1120# of breakout force.

. . . Adding too much counterweight could break an axle. . .

Not necessarily. Buddy of mine once broke a 60hp Long in half. Busted the transmission case. The axles were fine!

I still don't think it can happen. And, I still want to see a video of the attempt. :D

once ou put a spear ont hat thing. even a 700# mini bale is going to make the rear come up. if it was tied down.. I bet something yeilds the first bump you hit.. plus you won't get it high enough to load or unload a deckover.. or heck.. probably even a pickup bed...

that combo is dangerous IMHO... bales and that lawnmower...

I'm sure that you're right, but I still hope he posts a video.

The only way I would move a 700# bale with the loader on our B7500 would be with a 500# weight on the back and it weighs at least twice what the 149 weighs.

My old L3400 Kubota had 1100 lbs of lift on the loader. I sure wouldn't try to latch on to some of those larger round bales with it.
And it was big enough to run over that lawn tractor and smash it like big foot.

The 149 is supposed to weigh close to 1,000 lbs by itself. My John Deere M weighs about 2200 lbs, maybe I could put a loader on that and move hay.

The hydraulics on that kubota are tiny. Don't get me wrong, I know they will pick up enough to make it tippy, but weighted tires and some ballast will do wonders. We had a kubota at work and it couldn't lift enough to save itself. All the weight was up front.

I will look into a loader for the M.

Many years ago I had a MF 240D with no loader. I found a 3 point fork lift attachment with a hydraulic top link.

It has to have the hydraulic top link to load or unload hay bales from a trailer.

Everything I have found says the bare tractor weighs 650-700# (an example: weight question on #149 - Only Cub Cadets )

You assume too much... We have loaded tires and use a tiller or bushhog for counterweight.

I will look into a loader for the M.
You might also look into a 3 point forklift mast like xfaxman suggested for the M. That will be easier to move around on muddy ground with a heavy bale on board.
