Well, you are correct, in that Travis's mom saves ole yellers life from the gutting by a hog by sewing up his wound with a hair from jumpers (the mule) tail. Ole Yeller does recover, and the story goes on about the hydrophobic cow, and finally Ole Yeller saves the family by battling a hydrophobic wolf. In the end, Travis has to shoot Ole Yeller because he does have rabies. Let me tell you, that was pretty darn sad, and as anyone knows that has had to shoot a pet for any reason, it hurts, and it hurts bad.

Yeah, you might have been a bit young for "ole yeller".

The movie was about a young boy having to grow up and face adversity before he was ready due to some horrible circumstances that were thrust upon him.

Now compare Travis's actions and responsibilities he shouldered compared to our 20 somethings in college today wanting their safe spaces and coloring books when something doesn't go quite their way or someone says they disagree with them. Travis was a heck of a lot more "grown up" than anyone twice his age I have heard about recently in the news.

Although I don't think wild hogs are dangerous game, I have seen a sow protect her piglets. When I was 17, there were wild hogs near where I lived. There was a large area of woods and swamp that ran about 5 miles between my house and the next town along the shore of Lake Pontchartrain in LA. I had a 90 lb yellow lab and I used to take him with me in the woods hunting squirrels. One day we saw a couple of piglets and Max bounded over there to play with them... then out of nowhere came the sow with all the hair standing up on her back! she rolled Max up in a ball and was all over him! All I could do was shoot up in the air to scare the hog away. Max came out unhurt, but would never approach a piglet again...

Scarriest part of that post was when you said you fired into the air.

Remember the rules of safe shooting.. Know your backdrop/where your projectile goes. Impossible shooting into the air. Also illegal in many places.

Shooting into the ground.. Much safer!

Hopefully you had a smoothbore and it was full of shot, and not a small caliber rifle.

Hey deerefan, I went to high school in Mandeville. Our house was in Lewisburg, (first left off the Causeway). We were all the way at the end on 6th beach. There was nothing for 5 miles until you hit Madisonville. There were gators and hogs and garr fish! It was a cool place to grow up.

Hey Soundguy, I was in the middle of the woods I just mentioned with a 12 gauge full of #6. No infants were harmed during the event.
