Will a 45 Cal. stop a wild hog?

I think my weapon of choice would be a .357 Mag. with a good penetrating 200gr round. At least a 6 inch. barrel.

A .45 over 70 shooting a 1 oz. slug loaded to modern pressures will core a 1/2" hole through anything, breaking bones on its way. I have a Marlin like yours, and it's a real shoulder beater. My .44 magnum is nowhere near as painful to shoot.

About 30 years ago a friend of mine and I went out and shot a bunch of rounds through his 45/70.... and by a bunch, I mean about 6. After that it was like seeing who could take a punch in high school.

I love stuff like this.

Has there even been a documented case of one of these pigs charging and seriously hurting someone? The way some on this thread make it out as if these pigs kill people regularly when in reality I can't find many stories that document this type of aggressive behavior that is being described. I'm guessing too many people have been watching american hoggers reality tv shows.

The coyote thread people were claiming they killed horses and deer when in reality they eat mice, rabbits, and roadkill most of the time. This thread makes it sound like these boar/pigs/javelina are bloodthirsty when in reality they are vegetarians for the most part and run the other direction when they see people.

Most of the time you can't get close enough to them to get a shot with open sights unless you are hidden. I've walked right up on hogs in a group of about 6-8 sows and one boar. As soon as they saw me, which was about as soon as I saw them, they took off. I had a shotgun with buckshot in it and never even fired they were gone so fast.

Back to the original subject. If I remember correctly, and I may be wrong, the second largest polar bear on record was killed by an Inuit woman with a Remington Nylon 66 22LR. If I remember the story she stood and got it with one shot between the eyes. Hmmmm, can you say 'nerves of steel' to stand there and take that shot. Correct me if I am wrong on the story because it has been a long time since I read it and the record may be surpassed by now. Shot placement, shot placement, shot placement! Hard to aim when being attacked and running.

Still, I would want a fast firing, hard hitting, high capacity weapon if I were venturing into the territory of a dangerous critter. It would be my luck to walk up on a large sow with pigs while getting between the mom and babies and having her feeling cornered. I have been bit by a sow when a child and for a while they thought I was going to loose a finger or two. She took an ear of corn and two finger nails off my left hand. Wasn't trying to hurt me, just wanted the corn and got my fingers too.

I have not had a reason to shoot a wild hog yet- but most likely will one day. During my kayaking days I spent a lot of time in swamps and out in the middle of nowhere with just the wife and sometimes a grandchild. At the time I had handguns in 45 auto, 40 S&W, 9MM, 357 mag and .380. I added a lightweight, Taurus .44 mag with ported 3.5" barrel for hogs and black bear defense. It is not much heavier than a .45 auto and far more protection. I also vote for hard cast bullets or at least FMJ.
BTW: The Taurus .44 mag is the most accurate handgun I own at defensive ranges. But is pretty stout to shoot due to its light weight. It is not for an inexperienced shooter.

I would be very comfortable in killing a large feral hog with the .45 ACP and proper ammunition!

Those that I have seen killed don't appear to be that difficult to kill.

Eating the nasty things is not something I would do and the meat definitely does not taste like good pork or beef.
