Wildflower Fields

I live in Virginia. Last fall I purchased some regional wildflower mix to plant in my pastures and in a sloped area of my property that is too difficult to mow ("waste" areas if you will). I never got around to planting the seeds in the late fall because I took down some significant trees that lay in the field for the duration of the planting season.

Ok, so now I am preparing to plant them in early spring. Recommended procedure is to till under the fields, which I did in the fall, and spray any weed growth with herbicide. Problem is, wildflowers are supposed to be planted in "very early spring" to allow them to germinate. Well, if I have to wait for the weeds to germinate to kill them, how am I supposed to plant the wildflowers in time??

Any real farmers out there that could answer this question? In other words, if I wait for the weeds and grasses to start coming up in order to kill them, isn't it too late already to plant the wildflower seed?

Not if the weather cooperates so that you can till it again when the weeds are just sprouted and are 1/2" tall...

Under ideal conditions, I like to do that twice to my vegetable garden to kill the weeds. You can till very shallow -- 1" to 2" is enough to kill these new sprouts.

I think it is very interesting that you live in Virginai because my daughter also lives in Virginia. When people psot I alwasy look over to the left and see where they are from. If you fill in a litt bit of you bio-or Home page, I'm not sure what it is called on TBN, then under your name it will show that you are from Virginia.
