Wierd Winter Weather sites, annecdotes?

This has been an extremely strange winter in Vermont, and looking at some postings on TBN, I see that's true in more places than just the North East. By strange, I mean WARM! There have been at least 3 thaws this January, and this last one looks to be going into the start of February. I've been here 25 years, and strange things happen, but never before this much warmth! Posters from the midwest have made the same sorts of observations. Meanwhile, Russia, Eastern Europe and Japan have been having an extremely cold and snowy winter.

Does anybody know of a website that covers this? I don't mean just the forcast / radar pages of all the usual weather sites, (weather.com, wunderground.com...) but somewhere that shows where the warmth and cold are around the world, and how it differs from the norm.

I'd also like to hear how winter has been for you and how different it is from normal.

Guess I should also say that this January has also been very WET.

Several times it has looked like spring - which comes in April around here. That is to say, most of the snow has melted and it has rained more than once... I miss March as spring - grew up in W. Md.

This is the time of year I expect -20 degree nights and perhaps a week below zero. I'm not missing that at all! However, all this thawing is gonna mess up the plants here big time. We might lose maple sugaring season, and my delphiniums depend upon a solid snow cover to make it through the winter. Connecticut to the south of us has trouble growing those, because they lose the cover and then freeze the plants badly.

Thanks for the site, also looks like it takes a bit of wading through. All the older folks around here are saying they haven't seen anything like this "winter". No complaints, unless it really makes the poor plants sprout and then get frozen...

It has definitely been weird for us as well in SE NH. In your link to Yahoo Nes the article talks about tapping for maple syrup already. I posted a thread about this topic. As a backyard sugarer with 5 trees I am worried about the effect of the weather on this years sap run. Actually I am more worried about my lack of knowledge on how to deal with it /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

We had family up for Christmas. We had no snow to show them and 40 to 50F temps. We drove further north to Lake Winni and there was no snow there either.

The is a huge ice fishing tourney on Lake Winni every year. Every one is holding their breath. Last report I read said the lake was 75% open water. Unheard of for this time of year.

We have a pond out front we use for ice skating. Has not iced over yet. I have been in this house for 8 winters. Every year prior we go iceskating between Christmas and New Years.

I do not know the totals for the year officially but we have received about 2 feet of snow - mostly in dribs and drabs. I think we should be at about 4 or 5 feet by now.

On the plus side we are using less wood and less oil to heat the house.
