Did it have a cheap filter on it?

with that age and that much meatl.. I bet the filter is / has been in bypas for long time now...

air filter looks scarry. I've seen 'classic' 70's era tractors that were some of the first models in their line to get pleated filters.. and changed a few with vintage dates onthem, glued intot heir housing from thehard rubber that had cleaner paper in them than that.. :)

Probably was. I have changed many filters that you could shake and they would rattle because they were stuck in bypass.

Well as of 10:30 last night its out of my hands. Well see if he can get it pushed through as a warranty.

I did not mention this before but to make matters worse he works at the Ford Plant in Cincinnati making SuperDuty transmissions. You would think he would understand maintenance.

On my airplane, oil changes are documented in the engine log book. The oil is sent out for an evaluation to see what metals from the motor are deposited in the oil and again documented. Filters are also cut opened and inspected for metals. This is important to you and future possible buyers of your A/C . Oil changes are an important part of good motor life for any engine.

I do the same. On piston stuff 25 hr changes on some, 50 hr on others. The jet and turbo prop stuff is at 250 hrs.

difference is that when your auto engine breaks down you can walk home - not so easy when you're a ways off the ground. maintenance is a little more important there.

as i've said before, we're all members of an enthusiast site. the norm here is an understanding of equipment and maintenance, but that's not the case everywhere. i live in a rural area and don't see large volumes of vehicles, and there aren't too many days that go by where i don't see a vehicle sitting still and making a horrible rapping or scraping noise that could only have come from neglect. i don't even blink an eye or think twice about it when i see it.

i knew a guy that wanted me to come mow his pasture. when I got there he had an old ford 1210 ( 1220? ) in his shed.. 1 rear flat.. quarter sized hole in rear axle.. and a 4' mower on it.

I asked him why he wasn't mowing his own pasture, and pointed to the tractor.

he said it didn't run.

I put it's battery on charge while I mowed...

afterwards i put some fuel from my tractor in his. check oil.. dark and low.. searched his barn.. found a box with a NH filter and engine and utf oil in it. looked very old. found a reciept 1984!

I changed his oil and filter.. aired tire.. tractor started up.. smoked a bit.

i fixed the hole int he rear axle where he had backed into something.. using some epoxy putty.

tractor ran good aside from smoking. I think it smoked because it was 20ys old and had never had an oil change :(

were you doing this as a favor for him or were you trying to buy it off him?

i mowed his property as a favor. wasn't interested in his tractor. AFAIK, he sold it later that year prior to selling his property.

He did let me borrow his 4' mower to use for a couple minths in between.. for that I changed it's gear oil, sharpened it's blades and painted it, then greased up the tailwheel bearing, bushing and spindle, replaced a few grease fittings.. serviced the pto shaft and yoke joints too before giving it back.

Told me to change it and drive. It still runs fine, has plenty of power, and is averages 15.9mpg on this tank. About right for a 4x4 with 3.73 gears.

I put in 5W20 synthetic.

Chris

It holds 7qts and I got 6 out of it and another 1/2 qt in the filter. It had not used or lost any oil and I am fairly certain he did not check it because it took some effort to get the dipstick out. It was corroded in place.

Chris

I called my buddy and he priced us a reman at $4400 with a $1000 core charge. He said the core can not have a thrown rod. He said a days labot to change it.

The metal in it is what appears to be about 1/2 steel (magnetic) and the other 1/2 bronze.

I rented the little lady a car today, a Subaru. Tonight I got a call from the body shop and its already done. Not bad considering we took it in last Saturday and the holidays and all.

I am going to trailer the truck back tomorrow the 120 miles and then trailer the BMW home.

Chris

When you get to Cincy, give your BIL a kick in the pants for this. Of course a $5400 bill is probably gonna hurt just enough to change his mind.
Dont know why he would even think of spending money on it. ... Runs good - doesnt use oil. Just needs to start changing it some.

The price on the engine sounds about but the labor is way off unless he meant a day as in 24 hours. Flat rate for R&R of the long block is 24hr plus .2hr if it has a skid plate.

What I'm hearing is a greater than thou attitude... He let you use his rig, but you do nothing but bash him. Maybe next time you walk home?

Not sure. Maybe he throws 3 guys on it at once. He changed my buddies 360 20011500 Ram in a day. It was 4x4 also.

Call it what you want but my daughter even knows to change your oil. I told this all to his face and he had two choices, agree or swing. He agreed he screwed up.
