Also Volvo (red-block, cast-iron) gasoline 4 cylinder engines, up into the 90's.

As long as it's the SOHC B230F/B230FT version, the DOHC B234 PRV engine is an interference motor.

My first car was a 1979 mustang hatchback with the 2.3l. Was told the engine was locked up and it was free. Dragged it home and found the starter broke and the bendex was up against the flywheel. Replaced the starter and she ran like a champ....for a 2.3l that is. Hey, price was right

The early 2.3L's were pretty gutless and in that timeframe they put the dumbest rear end gears in the cars with them... my '90 Ranger came from the factory with 3.08:1 rear gears but 25" tires, at that time they were rated at 90hp, the earlier carbed ones were in the 80hp range I think... the one in my '97 Ranger I think is rated at like 107hp... The 2.5L that followed from '98 to '01 was rated a little higher but not much...

I had forgotten (deliberately, knowing the way my mind works ) about those DOHC ones...... a Volvo wizard I knew back in that era said "Never go near the DOHC".

They had issues, beyond just adding the interference weakness.
