why is this scrap on nearly every bale knot?

I have a baler that has SIX strings, so I make a LOT of those.
Brian Adams has a six string too, but it makes his fingers bleed since the summer of '69.

Candidly, I wasn't aware that anyone used Sisal today. Always ran poly when I had my long gone NH 565. Just the thought of small squares makes me perspire.... :p
Ohhh…… boy do I remember the 95 degree days on our farm , stacking bales to the roof in the haymows of our bank barns… was a great way to lose weight..
Kids and adults today have no idea what real work is.

That little 2-4" piece is the loop that is cut off every time a bale is tied off.
New Holland and John Deere are the ones that do it because they use the Deering style knotter. The McCormick knotter doesn’t leave any waste bits.
Thanks for that information. My New Holland made those cutoffs and I never knew why. It seldom missed a bale and I left well enough alone.

My ongoing philosophy is... The less amount of physical work I have to do concerning hay, the better off I am, which is why I round bale in net. My customer prefers it that way and so do I. I got it down to where the tractors and implements do 99% of the work from cutting to loading the bales and at 76 years old and the cancer, that is peachy with me. I can 'hear' the alfalfa growing presently....
