Thanks for the input, I wish there was another way to check the fluid level because, as stated, the sight plastic stinks. The PTO engaging has been an issue since day 1. It starts with such force and makes such a loud CLANK that it just doesn't sound healthy, but the dealer said it was fine. I owned a green tractor before this one and its engagement was much less harsh.
Other than making a mess, is there any harm in having too much fluid and just letting it drain itself down to the appropriate level?
The sight glass has two issues. You can hardly see the level and they are prone to cracking. I've learned the slight difference to white and off white.
If you have to replace a cracked sight glass, drive the tractor up on some boards or bricks so it is tilted enough to remove it without oil loss. Don't over tighten it either. I have done mine once.
About the PTO, I am wondering, do you engage it without the clutch? If the L3800 is like my L3400 the engagement is controllable using the clutch. I engage mine at idle and slowly let the clutch out. After engagement I ramp up the throttle. Maybe the L3800 is different. Maybe you have a gear drive, mine is HST.
I would think being over full is not an issue because at one time Kubota had a fix for the L3400 ratchet noise on disengaging the PTO that called for filling the fluid to the top in order to dampen the sound.
