Why do we like trails so much?

The woods on my place are so thick I doubt I could get through them without trails, at least at a pace greater than 0.5 MPH. There are areas today that I’d bet have never even seen a human footprint unless it was some lost Native American 200 years ago. I often sit on the porch looking out at the woods and wondering how the settlers ever did it. Trying to clear a way through with chainsaws and a tractor is grueling work, couldn’t imagine trying to do it by hand especially when one wrong move could be a death sentence.

I mowed all my deep trails this weekend. Somehow I didn't find a single tick afterwards. Some sections of newer trail were a complete carpet of poison ivy, though, yikes.

Two passes wide on the 54" mower deck keeps them comfortable for walking. My neighbor liked his "tighter" and now they are all quickly closed in from invasive bushes.

Experience has taught us, that we always cut them wider than it seems trails should be...... We do have a thread about trail clearing techniques.

My trails are quite simple. Just a pathway between the crops and the trees. They get me almost everywhere.

There are a few trails in the woods but they are pretty simple. Plus, here, the trees are spread out and not a lot of underbrush.

I spent this week cleaning up my trails and yesterday spraying Permethrin on them for ticks; 275 gallons of mix in total. Ticks around here are horrible.
