Why do people not want to work?

/ Why do people not want to work? #71
I worked hard for 50 years and deserve to relax and surf TBN. The knowledge base is unbelievable and most folks are friendly and willing to share opinions on every topic imaginable. There are a few Crotchety Old Farts that like to argue about everything and that is okay. This is not a milk-toast forum.

Milk toast, now there is a thought. I should make it in the morning with an egg on top. Maybe some ketchup too. :licking:

I don’t have much faith in most of the youth today. Lazy, fat, entitled, spoiled and dumb.. I try very hard not to deal with any of them.. If they are the future of our workforce we are in serious trouble..

This is true for a lot of people, it has a lot to do with how they are raised. Our son wants to go to my 40 hour a week job any chance he gets. He’s 7.

My wife and I own and run a convenient store and work all the hours ourselves (open 83 hours a week, closed on Sunday’s). She runs it while I work 40 hours in a machine shop (been there 24 years). She also home schools our kids there and works another job as well. We are beat down and worn out but our kids see us working hard.

There are numerous people who come in our store in all trades looking for good help. I’ve had 3 people in the past couple months offer me a job to come work for them. I love my job where I’m at now, I could make more money but I would miss out on my kids and wife time. I’ve figured out that money only makes you happy if you spend it.

well, I can say for certain my two sons aren't in the entitlement group. I was too hard on them for them to fall into that trap
One is a hospital administrator, and the other is a fireman /paramedic, and owns a lawn spraying business.

Growing up.They worked with me in the HVAC / plumbing business, but for some reason, neither wanted to stay in that business.

Interesting topic...

My thought from 35 years of property management is many have found they don't have to work to get by and often giving up or no longer qualifying for assistance scares the **** out of them...

As to the wage vs assistance equivalent it is quite high here in the SF Bay Area...

Minimum wage is now as high as $16.30 an hour here and paid time off and health coverage may be required...

My first Union Job was at a Tool and Machine Shop and the first 5 years each employee accrued 5 days of paid vacation annually... so one week plus 6 holidays paid...

Let me provide a real life example...

55 year old Grandmother has custody of her two teenage grandsons classified as special needs as the Mom was a drug addict when they were born...

55 year old grandmother lives in a home with $2800 monthly rent and pays $134 of the $2800 as the family portion...

Being on assistance means everything from subsidized utilities, free cell phone, $10 month 100 gig internet, afterschool programs, school meals, county Health Insurance Cards, Free to and from school door to door transportation... etc...

55 year old grandmother is on her third brand new car... this time the new car is a Toyota...

55 year old grandmother has not worked in years because she cares for grandsons...

Quick math shows this family of 3 receive $32,000 just for housing... when it is all said and done the benefit package is close to 70k...

Another case is when unemployment was extended several times back around 2012... had tenants laid off from work and received the max $1800 monthly check... this went on for circa 2 years... they were quite content being Mr. Moms looking after their young kids and getting the $1800 while baby's mom was out working...

Some were afraid they would have to get a job and then glad unemployment continued...

The simple matter is for many working is no longer necessary...

On the other hand we have hired some 20 something RN that are exceptional... many came from nothing and went the military route and used the education benefit to pay for school...

There are definitely two paths available as people can have a shelter, food and clothing without the need to earn it...

What? with ketchup and milk, toast doesn't need the egg, does it?

Why work when you can spend all day on TBN upping your post count...:D

Something in your post just told me ..
That 'somewhere' .. is here. "

Son is going to trade school. He says most of the students in his class drink and do drugs, while at school, dont want to work in the job programs.
They school two long days a week so they can work the other three if they choose. Some weeks my son has earned overtime.
There is so much opportunity out there now. Cant understand the mentality behind the apathy.

I worked in public assistance for a long time and never thought that any of the people receiving checks were living very high on the hog. Some of them were satisfied living in squalor in projects or substandard housing, some hated it and wanted a good job and lifestyle. Most of the latter didn't have anything going for them; They weren't anyone you would want working for you as there were a lot of low I.Q.s, lightfingeredness, lack of hygiene, lengthy records, substance abuse, and on and on. They also made the worst possible choices whenever given the opportunity. Not very many scamming the system; a few, but a very few.
Meanwhile the family next house to me for 20 years are all mentally retarded but worked their way off of SSI (mental retardation) and dad has a productive job as an over the road driver ( kinda scary when you think about that.). The oldest kid is a truck washer and will likely never be able to get an OTR license as he's pretty "involved" as they say. Mama can't come close to being able to read but gets the kids off to school clean and fed every day, attends all parent and special ed conferences, and does what a good parent should do despite an obvious dose of retardation. Somewhere in the past somebody did a real good job of teaching her to be productive, and it sure wasn't her mother whose case I had the misfortune to know when I worked in assistance.
I employ 3 or 4 workers on a very part time basis on the farm; it's a little extra money at Christmas. One guy has a degree in chemistry, the ex-Marine with a degree in English Literature I'll probably lose when he gets his appointment to the Fire Department. My best guy maybe got out of High School, maybe, but was very smart and excellent with customers. Unfortunately he died of an overdose recently; while his son wants his father's job, I wouldn't touch the son with a 10 foot pole . Very big on the entitlement mentality, not a good worker.
All this in New York where welfare benefits are supposed to be of the Cadillac variety.
