Why do people not want to work?

I read somewhere that the average age for kids to move out is 27. By the time I was 27 I had fought in a War, got married, had two Sons. Left home at 18.

I stayed at home until I got married at age 25; however, my Dad was out of work for a considerable amount of time and I supported the family and made major contributions after he found a job.

My lady friends brother uses a food bank. At Christmas he tells of seeing discarded turkeys walking home. Someone out of the goodness of their heart donates and that's the respect they get. Not to mention, an animal killed for nothing!

Having lived on the 'lower end' of the work spectrum, or worked with many that live that way, it's 'the system' these days...

EITC (aka 'workfare'). Instead of cash welfare you work and the feds will give you money on your tax return -earned income tax credit. It keeps going up till about 16,000 in earnings, then dropps off and disappears at about 35k.
If you have some kids it can be as much as $9,000 if you make 16k.
So what many will do is work part time or quit a job so they don't make more than 16k. Why work to make $27k when you can make 16k and get paid the other 9k for nothing?

If you make low money you get medicare - good insurance for free with $2 co-pay and no deductible. Get a job and lose that and now it's $5-10k a year for medical plus copay plus deductible...$12k isn't chump change.

So now you gotta make 35 or 40k to actually PUT MORE MONEY in your pocket than if you make 16k. Not including the possibility of food stamps, cash assistance, housing subsidy, free school lunches and breakfasts for the kids, etc. Lunch every day for my kids at school are nearly $50/month per kid. So that's $900/year for lunch...or it can be free!

Now you can be married - or live together and EACH collect on the system, cause together you make too much to do so.

that's the economics of today's society.

the other is, here, Shell is building a 'cracker plant' - gonna turn shale gas into plastic. Biggest contruction project in Pennsy since WW2. 6,000 workers working 3 shifts 7 days a week for YEARS to build it...we got 3 years to go yet. ALL UNION!
OK, great if you're an iron worker maybe, or a welder. Teamsters get $15.76/hour.

$31k a year. Gotta be drug free, have a CDL and physicals every year.
OR
work a dumb job and actually be better off!!

Our local grocery store is closed on tuesdays for lack of employees!! Hiring full time with benefits...BUT...you can make/do better working PT/for less money.

What do people that don't work live off?


US and welfare state doesn't compute well.

Even here, Berni Sanders dream country healthy people on minimum welfare have to show up in the morning to do work for the community.

So why does the US have system that keeps healthy individuals away from work? If I should go on uneployment befits I have to take any work and move to do so, if not I'm getting zero for eight weeks. You can apply for basic wellfare but then you must sell all you have and empty all your savings to be able to apply.

And I live in Norway, witch are held up as an ideal state by Berni Sanders and others.

you'd have to have at least 8 children to get that kind of money!!.. for a single person, it's at the poverty line, and you don't get enough to even rent an apartment!. you'd have to find a section 8 apartment, and good luck at getting that!.. the benefits are MUCH less for an honest, single person!!.. it's the abusers that han't gotten caught yet that get huge benefits!!..

as someone that has done income tax returns for many years...NOT TRUE!

See my other post - if you make 16k (full time min wage or there abouts) and have 3 kids the feds will refund all your income tax paid in AND give you about $9k in cash refund AND full health care with no deductible and $2 copay. that's well beyond a cadillac plan that runs $1000-1500 a month (and more with 3 kids).

So yeah, 40k is about right.

And where does one get a $20/hour job?

You can teach school - MAYBE - and make that. If you're willing to spend $70k on a degree and work as a teachers aide for 2 or 3 years - at $9.50./hour here.
Union Teamsters pay $15.76.
Union Public transit drivers pay $13.79/hour.
Manager at a grocery store 16.11/hour.

Now if you go to tech school for HVAC/R you will start at 65k. Same or better for welder, IF you're willing to work outside. Factory welder here pays $15/hour (i did his tax return).
Selling cars at a dealership can pay $60-80k - again, did the tax returns.

And you can get housing here for 15-25% of your annual income (section 8/public welfare project) and there is NO income limit....

i sure see a lot of people complaining about me in here. Maybe we should hold people accountable instead of telling entire generations that they are worthless. Keep telling a group of people they are worthless and "my people are better than you" and it will come true.

most of my friends and I are in our 30's and quite successful in our careers and our homes.

yea im in my 30's and didn't see much generalizations.. your successful got it, then 99% of this thread wasn't aimed at you. not sure why your taking any form of an insult

Accountability is no more, parents hardly have the ability to hold their own children responsible these days.. When I grew up if I did something stupid I would pay for it with more than likely the backside of my dads hand..

I came home from school and went to the barn to shovel cow sh!!, then headed to the wood lot to cut firewood, there no was texting, tv, video games, vape pipes, this country is in a world of trouble and they have done it to themselves..
